At what point (VW NOx EA189 emissions)

Hi
I have my letter for a VW service action, EA 189 NOx emissions, and it is very very vague on details.
There is a bit about waiting, having a courtesy car etc.
So I DuckDuckGoed and found it as "about an hour".
An hour for what? A software update and a plastic air straightener.
SO I am wondering at what point in the development of the engine, VW gave up and settled for some software to defeat the emissions test, since the 'cure' for the 2.0 litre is some software in and some software out.
The 1.6 litre is some software in and some software out, and an air straightener to shake it all about.
OF course when the Scandal HIT the fan a solution was found. Maybe a few more hours of work would have found this at development stage, or more likely a few more hours would have broken the budget.
I am bemused, at the total lack of an explanation, apology or any kind of engagement about this matter. Oh yeah! I did use the word courtesy above in respect of a 'courtesy car' but surely VW have no concept of the word or it's practical use or application.
Obfuscation and maybe even smoke and mirrors from VW is all I get via the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency, not direct from VW at all.
I will get a certificate of completion for the work carried out, so should I add this to my CV? It might improve my job prospects, but it certainly don't improve my impression of VW,
Rant temporarily over.

Would you still have bought the car if the emissions output on the spec had been slightly higher? All matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.0

Their lying and cheating saved you some money, because the emissions are higher than the tax group its actually in.
You want an explanation? The real world emission results were crap and not good enough so they got the cars ECU to tell lies instead of finding a real fix.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Before booking it in do plenty of research into whether the upgrade has caused any problems to the engine code and vehicle you have.
Its a bodge and some bodges fail.0 -
More to the point would you have bought the car when it wouldn't pull you out of bed until you get the revs up to about 2000rpm, which from all i read is what most people are finding after the work has been done, many wishing they'd refused.0

I have no idea why anyone would want the "fix" done. There is no benefit to the car owner/user as far as I can see.
If I were buying used I would likely favour those that had not been "fixed".0 -

Yes.
The car satisfied the NCAP wants of a 5 star rating, 7 seats etc etc. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

It is 'Disabled' class and the price seems to be a constant Zero. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I notice that about some Audi models and perhaps the Tiguan, but if you could point me in the right direction of a bulletin board, it would be appreciated. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
So, what was the question? Or did you just want to complain about the free work being done to change a software cheat that doesn't affect the operation of a vehicle you'd have even if said software cheat had never existed?0

The guy probably wants class action lawsuit brought against VW and £500 cash refund for drop in value (which, if anything, the VW's I've been keeping an eye on have gone up in value).0
