  • Just bought my granddaughter what may be her last set of Lego friends, as I think she will be too old next year. She loves them.

Well, that's certainly a wake up call, in case I ever find myself inadvertently buying the wrong kind of toy for my niblings, thinking they might enjoy it. And should one slip through the net, I'm sure my brother would make sure to tell me, in no uncertain terms, to never get his precious children something so sub-par.

Imagine the shame when they have sleepovers and the cheapies are revealed!

My 6 year old LOVES Lego, and I find it infuriating when people buy "replica/compatible" sets for him as gifts.

The likes of M.Y building bricks, the ELC version etc...

Obviously I am/he is grateful for the gifts

    Clearly!

My niece plays with our 30 yr old Lego sets, carefully and lovingly preserved with instructions.

The new Lego doesn't interest her, it's so dumbed down its barely recognisable as Lego at all. Way too many special parts that are just for a particular set, and how a car is now a pre-formed block! How sad.

I remember when you had to build a car from the standard pieces.

But back on topic, what made Lego so great was how well manufactured it was (and probably still is).

Cheap copies of it are sacrilege.

I have no doubt that the original lego is the best. The lego my kids had multiplied over the years and gave my children endless pleasure but OP you come over being a tad ungrateful. You cant tell people what to buy your children as gifts.

I'm not sure that used sets hold their value. Pristine sets still in their boxes will increase in value quite nicely, particularly if the set is discontinued.

Used sets certainly do hold their value. They won't make as much money as a sealed set but you'll still get your money back plus some.
For most of us it's just a toy - to entertain - not part of our investment portfolio.

At one point I would have suggested anyone who was investing should have considered it. Even someone who was bad at it should have been doubling their money in a year. I think you'd struggle to find many investments which would double your money in a year with minimal risk. However due to various factors it's no where near as lucrative as it was.

If not wanting other children to be given toys that will leave them frustrated and upset makes me a spoilt brat, then that's fine, I can live with that.

If you are happy to give people gifts that are not suitable, and would happily still buy replica products that are not fit for purpose for a child, then that is also fine and entirely your choice.

This post is not about gratitude. It is just about highlighting to others that might not be aware that not all replica brands are value from money.

Personally I spend time and effort thinking about what presents to buy people, and given I am on a tight budget, then I would rather spend £10 on a small genuine Lego set than a larger replica one. My son would love any gift that he can play with, regardless of size or price tag.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

I keep a supply of polybags and small lego sets that my kids will like. If they get cheap-o brands, I usually tell them they can choose to swap for some genuine lego and then we re-gift the cheap-o to someone else when they go to a party.

My lot have played with Lego I retreived when my mother was having a tidy out. Some of it I recall saving up for as a child, a few blocks I recognised as coming from a kit from my godfather - and I still buy & play with it.

A fellow lego fiend's mum bought a mixed bag said to contain all needed to make a big plane plus others odds & bits on ebay, sorted it by colour then shape, downloaded the instructions & built the thing, then disassembled it all for her lad in time for his birthday. Her husband was on distract-the-lad duty, so there was a bit more muddy footie gear, but everyone was delighted when he got a £150 kit for £30.

I wouldn't buy non-Lego, but I afford the presents by strategic sale spotting & hallelujah for this thread which has both cost me a packet & saved me a bundle. I succumb to temptation easily, but the thread means I don't need a third mortgage.
