Eon - in credit, what happens when leaving/switching?

Hi

We are currently with Eon for dual fuel and we are now on standard rate after fixed rate finished. Need to switch away now asap (been slow to sort but on the case now!).

We are currently in credit by over £200 after Eon hiked up our monthly payments. What happens when we initiate a switch? Can we ask for the credit to be paid back to us before we switch? How long does it take to get it paid back?

Been with Eon for years but cannot keep overpaying for the sake of it so it looks like we might move to Avro with no exit fee so we can move back if they ever bring out a deal worth moving to.

Such a shame Eon don't value long time customers!

    Exactly!

I doubt if you will get a refund of credit now - with the highest consumption period to come. However once final meter readings have been accepted by losing(Eon) and gaining(Avro) companies, you should get any refund due.

Alternatively, cancel your DD now and wait for final bill from Eon.

P.S. Ensure Eon are aware that you are leaving because of their disgraceful policy of penalising existing customers

I'm leaving EON despite thinking their customer services are quite good (but not their new tariff prices for existing customers) You have the option to set the DD if you wish on your online account so if you believe they are taking too much why don't you check that out? If you decided to leave then once the switch has happened you will get a final bill and receive a refund if one is owed. Cancelling the direct debit may lead to confusion and is not IMO to be recommended. EON will owe me some money but I expect that to be repaid once the bill is recalculated.

In my experience, E.oN are very good at Final Billing and repaying any credit balance once they get Final Readings from your new supplier. The weak link, as I have just found out with another new boy on the block (not Avro), is that this process can take more time than it should. For example, my transfers went through on 4th December but no readings have been passed to the old suppliers as of today. Fortunately, I provided my old suppliers with weekly readings so both have said 's*d it' we will raise final bills and argue the toss when we receive closing readings.

Thank you, I will make sure when I initiate the switch that I take weekly readings/photos of the readings just in case.

    Hi Hannah2,

I'm so sorry that you've decided to leave us, but I fully understand the need for the best tariff for you.

Malc and I have been feeding back all of the comments about customers wanting to leave and why, so please be assured we are doing this.

When you change supplier, you'll ask your preffered company to start the switch. The account with us will then go in to a 'loss pending state' this just means it's getting ready to go and you can't make any changes to the account specifics.

Your new supplier will then ask for you start meter reads to open the account from, they'll send them to us to close the account down.

We then issue a final bill, including all of the usage up to the final reads and any credit will be automatically refunded back to your bank account. If you've cancelled the Direct Debit the refund may take a little longer as it will be a cheque.

Sorry to see you go Hannah2.

    Thank you

    Hi giraffe69,

Sorry to see you go also.

That's right, we'll automatically refund the credit to the bank account once we've produced your final bill.

Thank you for the feedback about the customer service, that's really nice to hear.

I'm sorry the tariffs are no good for you at the moment.

I think it is a rip off how the energy companies are taking way too much in Direct Debits.

I heard You and Yours on Radio 4 saying some people had £3k on account and they were still taking high DD's

The amouny owed by energy companies is BILLIONS and they should be made to put the credit ON EVERY BILL and generate a dedicated letter when it goes above 50% of annual usage.

Of course they avoid this because they use it as cash flow.
Thanks, don't you just hate people with sigs !

And, yet at the energy firm I work for - the amount customers owe us from debit balance and final instalment plans significantly exceeds the amounts customers have as credit balance.

I appreciate that every industry has bad debtors, but the amount the energy industry has is quite horrifying from a cost perspective.
Thank you all for helping me make my day by saving money!

Sorry you will get no sympathy for an energy company here.

Soon the so called "amount owed" will be wiped out by smart meters because people will be moved to monthly billing and you will charge interest if anyone wants longer.

Energy companies keep energy prices artificially high, they blame "the markets" but gamble in those markets to get those high prices. Meanwhile they double dip by taking 300% extra profit from the other end.

You may work for one of the new companies, you credit vett people who are not taking credit, just paying an outstanding invoice when it becomes due.

The amount "owed" is just a number generated by your computer system.

Standing charges are a rip off and should be scrapped.

The "Heat or Eat" issue is very real for a huge amount of people.

The energy market is not functioning, I would break it up, nationalise it and sack those idiots at OFGEN.
Thanks, don't you just hate people with sigs !
