Hi,
Could anyone offer any advice on the pros/cons of hiring a chair at a Salon?
More importantly, anyone know what the cost of hiring a chair is to run a beauty/nail service?
Thanks,

To answer your first question.... personally I don't hire a chair in a salon because when I get my hair cut I always expect a chair to be included the price0

The pros might include things like getting a booking service, cleaning and added air of permanence/relaibility (but you'd want to check your contract very carefully.)
The cons might be that your employment status (self employed/employee) might be queried, that the salon owner would keep keep a second set of records from which your cash payments had evaporated and things did not go according to plan.
You need to have a degree of trust in the salon owner, and to find out if anyone else has hired a chair from them. Probably worth a try for a few months, but keep detailed records of *everything* - staff, footfall, clients, meter readings, everything that could be used to protect you should HMRC come knocking.0 -

The pros would be that you don't need your own salon. You'll be probably be self employed so times you work should be down to you (if they're not, it's not really self employed), although of course the salon opening times may restrict you. For example, if the salon closes at 7pm you couldn't have appointments at 8pm unless the salon allows you to remain open and close up once you've done.
Cons would be the salon could close or move. The rent of the chair might be more than what you're bringing in from customers.
You'd need to see whether you're expected to bring in all your own products and customers or whether the salon will allow you to use theirs and pass customers onto you if you're free. If using your own items you'd need to make sure they're not a health and safety issue and there's also the added cost. There may be an added cost to use their products instead so if given the option you'd have to work out which is best for you. You'd also have to market yourself and ask customers to go direct to you (or phone up the salon and request you).
You'd also need to consider insurance. Would the salon cover you or would you need your own insurance? This could add on more costs.
You'd also have to think about pricing. Does the salon have a price list you'd have to stick to or could you set your own prices?
Course, if self employed you'd have to register as self employed and declare everything.
I imagine prices would vary so the best idea is to go and see or phone up salons you'd like to rent from and ask for a price and see what's included and find out any terms you'd have to agree to.0
