Summer holiday destination ideas

It looks like there are only enough funds for one holiday this year, 10-14 days in the summer and am looking for some inspiration with regard to destinations. The OH and I love holidays where we can have a nice balance between relaxing and doing very little, but also seeing sights and interesting places, love good restaurants and exploring quieter areas off the beaten track. Done lots of Greek Islands, plenty of places in Italy and now stuck for where to go next. Ideally it would be within 4-5 hours on a plane (OH really dislikes flying) but at a push I think she could be convinced to go further if it is a really great place.
Ideally fly from London, Bournemouth or Southampton.
Any ideas and inspiration gratefully received!

Went to portugal a few years back, wasnt expecting much but was a surprisingly good holiday, could tick a lot of boxes for you. Steer clear of the more clubby resorts and there is some really nice quiet areas whilst still having amenities nearby. Plenty off nature reserves, coastal walks, castles/forts and the food is pretty damn good!0

My vote goes to Kalkan in Turkey (90 minute transfer from Dalaman). A beautiful little town with some really good roof top restaurants. Hotels range in class but there are some top hotels there.
We booked through the Discerning Collection and split out time between poolside and beach clubs (think quiet club not party style).
Trips out in the mountains / boat trips may fulfil your "doing things" requirement!
Hope that helps :-)0 -
Has anyone else been to Poland in Summer?
My wife and I visit Poland three times a year and summer vacations are fantastic value for money. Gdansk has some fantastic beaches and the neighbouring resort of Sopot is a delight.
We visited Gdansk in July and the weather was hotter than Spain and far cheaper. Sopot is a hidden gem of a resort making some of the Spanish resorts look dismal. There are plenty restaurants and some fantastic Beer Bars especially for the beer lovers.
We have just booked for Gdansk in March, Ryan air £34 each return and accommodation for £120 for 4 nights.
Other places in Poland during the Summer Months experience hot weather, Krakow is a delight and many of the other Cities.
So expensive holidays need not cost a fortune.0 -
Malta/Gozo?0

We've just booked Malta for a week in September, this will be our 4th visit, 3rd time in September and we're going for a special anniversary.
We stay in St. Julian's which is very clubby but the hotel we stay at is a 15 minute walk away so no noise at night. There are lots of places to eat & drink & plenty of touristy things to do.
I also second Portugal, we've been to Lagos 3 times, it's an hours drive from Faro and it's still quite a traditional fishing village with lots to do.0 -
Rather than giving you the names of places I've enjoyed visiting, I'm going to suggest a way for you to make your own decision -
go to the website of your most convenient airport, and look at where you can fly to from there. Then spend a bit of time with google - research flight costs, and things to do in each of the locations that you can fly to easily. Then decide where you want to go.No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0
