The Barclays system seems sensible to me. Roaming is usually enabled by default. And the cost of that 30 min call would have been far greater than the cost of sending a single text on roaming rates.

Well roaming isn't enabled by default and my texting didn't work from the Philippines nor does it work from here in Gozo.

Were the ATMs from the same bank? I've found that some banks don't seem to be able to 'talk' to mine in the UK. So I've tried one ATM and it won't work, but the one next door does.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

If you travel a fair bit you'd be well advised to get a mobile with roaming included. Your choice of course but you know the consequences....

I live in Gozo now so no more travelling. If I want to phone another country, ie UK or India, I use Skype.

So how did you phone from the Philippines to your UK bank?
You can hardly blame the bank if you choose not to enable roaming when you are out of the UK.

I'm blaming the way the system of the silly computer is set up. Do keep up.
