Hanging a mirror above a multi fuel stove?

I assume there's set distances & such. Does anyone have any idea what they are?

The base of our mirror is 235mm above the top lip of the opening. The fire is a 5kw one.

Problem is the mirror has actually warped. The centre of the base of the mirror is now 2.5"-3.0" away from the wall i'd say. I'd have to have a proper measure up on that one. I believe the mirror is probably on a wooden backing which has then had some felt like coating. So as you look at it it'll possibly be mirror(glass)>wood>felt at a guess.

The fire doesn't protrude from the inset but it doesn't sit super far back either. It does sit back a bit in the inset, just not a great deal.

Now if it's reached its warping point & gets no worse then that's ok, but obviously i don't want it to continue & shatter.

As i've only noticed it today then i'm not sure how long it took to get like this, how quickly it progressed.

We burned a few fires around last March, not a great deal, just trying it out & running it in. It was early November we really started using it proper for the first time though.

We did/do have one of those stove fans on the top. As a tester i got a digital thermometer out & put it just below the mirror. Without the fan it was i think 33.3c but with the fan in place the thermometer got to 38.4c & was still climbing but my arm got too achy :rotfl:

The stove fan has started clanging though & getting on my nerves so it wont be going back on & i don't think i'll be replacing it.

Combustible materials should be at least 450mm above the stove and 150mm from the sides, although the stove manufacturer may state more. The glass in your mirror would be OK, but not the wooden frame - Surprised the glass hasn't broken if it has distorted as much as you say - Are you sure it is glass and not plastic ?

I think you will be surprised at how hot the wall can actually get - When mine is running at full blast, I've seen the wall hit 120°C immediately above the stove and 70°C at 500mm higher.
Got thermocouples embedded in the plasterwork, so can keep an eye on these things :)

  • Well i measured up 450mm & that would put the mirror to the ceiling so we'd just have to find a smaller mirror if that was the case.

Also i'm way way out with my measurements. Must've been because i was tired last night. That's the story i'm sticking to anyway. It wasn't a 2"-3" gap, i don't know why i said that. I measured it earlier & it's 10mm that it has warped. The ends touch but the middle is 10mm off the wall.

I'm pretty sure it is glass although not 100%. It doesn't ting when tapped but it is mounted on wood so i don't know. It was bought as glass but that doesn't mean anything i guess.

Put up a mirror without a wooden or plastic frame and you should be ok.
  • It's pretty obvious that plastic / wood can't handle the temperatures in the current location, whatever those temperatures may be.

Out of interest what is glass supposed to be able to withstand?

There are many different grades of glass. Glass used for a mirror would not be the same as that used for an oven door. However, ANY grade of glass would be able to withstand temperature in your application.
