It makes no difference as liability requires negligence

If a car hits me and sends me into another car how am i negligent?
But if you hit the other car first...

Did car 3 push car 2 into car 1?
Or did car 2 hit car 1, then car 3 hit car 2 afterwards?

    Now prove it...

As in DD's case, car 4 did that. In this case it seems the same as a queue normally has more than just 3 cars.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

Would it be negligent if car 2 was 30cm off the bumper of car 1? Although proving that would be a tough task (even with dashcam footage).

If you are the middle car in a 3 car shunt I'm not sure how you could be liable for damage to the car you got shunted into - surely liability requires fault?

Easy - you were (a) too close to it, or (b) did not have your brakes on! As car 1, I claimed against Car 2.

In can fall into the pot of technicalities. Let say you are car 2 and you have stopped at traffic lights wwhen car 3 hits you and pushes you into car 1. Technically you should have applied the handbrake when you stopped because in the event you are hit from behind your foot may lift of the brake pedal causing you to roll forward rather than being pushed (rammed) forward.

Because you were at rest without your brakes on so were not in control?

Car 1 doesn't really care why Car 2 hit him, but Car 2 hit him so he holds them liable.

Car 2 holds Car 3 liable for damages to him and for causing him to damage Car 1 so reclaims this from Car 3.
