  • Well last night dental checkups didn't go too well as apparently I need some root canal treatment that is going to cost £233! Never had anything like that before and really not looking forward to it pain wise or cost wise. However appointment made for a couple of weeks time.
On the positive side, I am feeling rather better today and have been to the gym and might now go and make some soup.
  • Hi Maiden Mum wow that's a hefty dental bill  Pig racing sounds like great fun :D

It is definitely soup weather here in the south today. Cold wet and miserable. What sort do you make ?

  • Hi Skint yet again. My favourite soup is sweet potato and butternut squash but today I actually made parsnip and apple from a bag of reduced parsnips and also sweet potato and carrot soup plus a butternut squash, swede & bean goulash. All of the recipes recently came from somewhere on here I think but I'm afraid I have already forgotten who supplied them! Only thing is both my blender and my food processor have both stopped working and I am wondering now whether to go out and buy replacements as I feel like I have literally been chopping veg all day and am rather fed up of it! They were both Asda basics but they have done me well for quite a long time.
Tell me about my dental work! Seems to be one thing after another at the moment and I am so desperate to save lots of money!
  • Well it would seem that our spate of bad luck continues!

Yesterday morning, on his way to work, someone went into the back of OH's car. The boot is smashed in and in all likelihood the car is now a right off. So the £491 that we need to pay for the new clutch will be a complete waste of money! It felt bad enough before but at least we had the consolation of thinking "at least the clutch won't need doing again for a long while." The value of the car is as little as £350 apparently which I was quite shocked at and is no going to help at towards the purchase of another car. I feel rather fed up tbh. I've done nothing in half term, been nowhere and seen no-one and have tried being good with money but it feels like ne step forward & two steps backwards at the moment.
  • In an attempt to try ad sae more money I have been through my freezers now and here is the list of their contents:

    11 raw chicken breasts (2,2,2,2 & 3)
    Raw mince - enough for 2 people x 2
    Small bag of prawns
    Large bag of prawns
    2 Garlic chicken kievs
    50 mini sausage rolls
    1 packet of bacon
    1/2 bag of oven chips
    Full bag of potato wedges
    12 chipolata sausages
    7 small salmon fillets
    2 smoked haddock fillets
    2 cod fillets
2 bags of cooked beef (2 portions in a bag)
2 bags of cooked chicken (2 portions in a bag)
2 bags of cooked lamb (2 portions in a bag)
7 bags of cooked gammon (2 portions in a bag)
3 bags of cooked turkey (2 portions in a bag)
    A bag of garlic mushrooms
    4 breaded haddock fillets
    3/4 box of normal fish-fingers
1 box of g/free fried mi chicken fillets
    Garlic dough balls
    2 g/free burger buns
    4 normal burger buns
    G.free wraps
    G/free pains au chocolate
Vegetable casserole / curry - 2 lots of at least 2 portions each
    3 unidentified bags!
1/2 bag of quorn chicken pieces
    2 & 1/2 bags of peas
1 box of hot chill - 2 portions
  • Oh Maiden Mum I really feel for you. Does your OH need a car for work commute ?

At least you have a lot in the freezers you can make lots of meals from that. How long do you have to last until payday ?

  • Yes OH definitely needs a car for work commute Skint yet again. He has been given a courtesy car for now - a new Corsa & I have to say it is nicer & bigger inside than I thought they would be. Its got me thinking now - is it time to get a new car on finance with interest rates being so low? or even buy one on a credit card & then do a credit transfer to a 0% one?
At least OH wasn't hurt in the accident although rather bizarrely his insurance company have rung him twice now to check he hasn't got whip lash or anything, lol!

Pay day for OH is on Friday & last day of the month for me. It's rather ridiculous I think to have that much food in the freezer so close to pay day! So nothing bought for dinner today. Some of those contents will be used!
  • I am glad your OH is ok. Whiplash can come on later so that may be why they have called twice.

Are they still talking about writing the car off ? My friend had someone run into the back of her in the summer and got a courtesy car. As soon as they wrote the car off she had to hand back the courtesy car, so check your policy.

Many policies do not provide a courtesy car once your car is written off and this is something I did not realise. When my DS renewed his car insurance recently he had to pay extra to have a courtesy car for 90 days after a write off as he commutes an hour a day to work and cant manage without a car should he ever be involved in such a situation..

It's good that you have stored all that food - for times like now when you need to spend as little as possible !

  • Courtesy car will need to be returned I assume once we have heard that the car is definitely a write off.
Think we are going to buy a newish one on a credit card and then immediately transfer the balance to a 0% one. OH's Mum has offered to help us out but I do feel that we should be standing on our own two feet by this time in our lives so not to keen on that offer, kind though it is of her.
  • I know what you mean about lending money from parents but my parents gave me an interest free loan over 5 years instead of me getting a bank loan.
I just set up a standing order and pay them an agreed amount per month and they are happy that they are helping me out. We have a written agreement that if anything should happen to them the balance owing is deducted from my share of any inheritance money.
As long as you can keep moving the balance to a 0% credit card or pay if off before the term expires you will at least avoid any interest but do you have to pay a fee to move it to the 0% card ?
