Read the Everything and Anything New York thread and ask Q's there if needed.
If you hotel is near the Metro then you will be fine IMHO.0 -
NY main tourist areas are all within a few subway stops. You don't need to be right in the centre. If you are on a budget, you would be much better off looking at hotels outside of Manhattan/Central Park. You can still be close to the shopping area/empire state etc... within about 10 minutes with the subway but save £100 or more by just stepping off Manhattan.0

august in new york is scorchio, so walking around and using the subway will be stifling. Personally i prefer to stay in lower manhattan or better still off the island, as i like to escape the noise/lights of the tourist areas0

Go on to googlemaps and drop pins in the location of the hotels and places you want to be near there you will know the best location for you,.
We dont know your level of mobility or if you want to be in the middle of it all or not.
One other point i would always chose a hotel which is no more than a couple of blocks from a subway stationLive each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0 -
Yup - any hotel close to the Subway is good for Manhattan access. Get a Metro Card and you are sorted for transport for the whole city.

The price difference between going for a place by a station in Long Island City over one in Manhattan was the difference between our being able to afford go for a full fortnight as opposed to a short break.
Lots of good advice on eeking-out your budged in the aforementione NY sticky - read it well.
