My late father's car

Hello

My father died last year aged 93. He was still driving a few months before he fell ill and the insurance on his car is up for renewal this month. He had it insured for any driver and while he was ill it was useful to be able to drive my mother to see him or do the shopping. My mother is nearly ninety and would like to keep the car but she doesn't drive. Is it possible for her to insure the car for any driver while specifically excluding herself?

Yes, my Dad's insurance company did this.

Did you tell the insurance company that your father has died? I thought insurance policies stopped on the death of the insured.
  • Thanks a lot. The policy remains valid until it runs out but his current insurers won't set up the arrangement I'm looking for. Are you able to tell me which company were able to do it for you?

why dont you just insure the car in your name?
  • Because I live four hundred miles away so can't credibly be named as the main driver.

A policy is not valid one the policy holder has passed (other than for covered events relating to death, if applicable).

The owner of a car does not need to be insured as a driver (assuming they don't drive it, of course). Probably need to go through a broker or talk directly to a preferred insurer. Most online systems and comparison sites have problem with this scenario.
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but ignorance is lethal.

so who is the main driver of the car ? get them to insure in their name

what you are suggesting is not a normal insurance situation and many mainstream insurers wont insure you as a named driver on a car that is owned by a non driver

you will not be able to arrange the insurance that you are looking for on line so i would suggest you speak to an insurance broker and see what they suggest

Try Saga and RIAS (another over-50s insurer) first as they are more likely to have experience of this scenario.

When Mr S couldn't drive for 6 months (medical reasons - not because he'd been naughty!) RIAS simply switched me to main driver and Mr S to named driver (obviously on the understanding that he wouldn't actually be doing any driving) as it was the simplest and cheapest thing to do. He remained the legal/registered owner of the car.
