A little advice for someone in need

Options
Hello everybody, this is my first ever forum and first ever post so I'm sorry if anything is wrong.
So I need a new car because I start a new job soon and have now lost my company van.

I'm only looking for a £1500 - £2000 car, I don't want car finance for a long period of time and have no money saved. I also have no family or friends that are in the situation to lend me this money.

What I would like to ask is if anyone could give me any ideas of how I can get a loan of £1500 - £2000 for up to 6 months(ish) that won't cost me a bomb. I say this short period of time because I hate being tied down with any credit for long periods of time.

Any answers would be fantastic.

Thank-you everyone. :D

From your post it's not clear whether you are currently employed or. "between jobs". If you are employed then a credit card with a cash transfer facility and 0% interest period might be your best bet.

Try somewhere like 'ZOPA' or 'Ratesetter'. They are p2p lenders.

  • I'd have thought a credit card with a good 0% rate would be the best bet. Other than that short term loans tend to be very expensive comparatively.
  • Hows about a £500 cheapy, local faceache selling groups handy for such things, i've seen some quite decent little motors on the local site my wife uses.
Worry about something better when you are established at your new workplace?
  • Thanks for the replies people, I am employed currently and do have a small amount of cash behind me.
Sounds like the £500 run-around could be the answer, although they can come with some hidden problems at that price. Maybe look at the 0% credit cards too. Can I just cancel a credit card when I've had my use out of it and paid back what Ive spent?

Again, thanks for the helpful replies.

Yes, once you had cleared the balance you could just cancel the account and destroy the card.

I wouldn't cancel the card afterwards - put your normal spending (even just a little) on it and ensure you pay the statement balance off in full each month. This way there won't be any interest to pay.

For each month you do this, your credit score will improve which will be useful should you need credit in the future. :)
