Mattress protectors/toppers

Desperate for new one, we've had a thin one that had has ripped at the edges and so basically isn't really on the mattress anymore. I plan to steam the mattress next weekend, and would love to have a new topper for it. Bit TMI but husband gets rather hot and sweaty which is why I'd like to protect the mattress.
I'm not sure if we need a protector or a topper, and they range from £20 to £150!
Where do I start?

A topper is about 25-75mm of extra cushioning, usually some type of foam. It is absorbent and usually either plane foam or memory.
A mattress protector protects the mattress surface damage from dirt and absorbs small spills, and some are waterproof. They are thin and a sheet goes on top.
This is what I buy and they are waterproof, but they do not last as the surface towelling wears away but there is a sheet covering it, but the real issue is that the plastic cracks and will allow liquid through. They last about 6 months before replacing but cost £7

As a person the lounges on the bed it is great for red wine and coffee spillages, but the sides are often not waterproof0 -

£7 for every 6 months is not bad, especially when you consider a £70 topper might only last a couple of years.
I'll look at that brill thanksMoney money money.

Dunelm have a huge range. I have just replaced the one on my single bed with a memory foam one that has little 'pockets' in, which stop you getting too hot, and it works brilliantly. It was £99, and replaced a £80 one that didn't have the little air-flow pockets, and used to make me far too hot at night. Even though it's quite expensive I would recommend to anyone. It also makes the rather too soft and saggy mattress totally comfortable again.

We have both.
A topper should be considered essential IMO for any mattress for additional comfort and adding longevity to your mattress. Cheaper ones tend to not last very long - we had a £30 microfibre topper from Amazon that was useless after 6 months. We now have a really nice wool topper from Soak And Sleep.
We also have a protector over this to protect both the topper and the mattress.0 -
Another question - do you all find you need really deep sheets to cover both a topper and a mattress?Money money money.
