Edit: misunderstood what you meant as a back up card. As a back up it would only have the limited amount, say £10, on it that you bought it for, so not much use. If you buy the Amazon Giftcard (from Amazon!) you can then check your remaining giftcard balance before a purchase, and even top up the giftcard balance as required.

What I meant was to use it when I have a £ 0 gift card balance or if the purchase is bigger than the gift card balance. At the moment my debit card functions as such but I'd like to remove it.

Yes it will do that. I have done it. However it is likely to get rejected as having insufficient funds if your purchase takes you within £0.99p of the pre-paid card balance! Better to go through that whilst using the prepay to top up your Amazon giftcard balance.

I use Ecopayz for that purpose, you can generate with them many "disposable" prepaid cards which are good for one use, no fees to generate them and just make a UK bank transfer to top up your account with a fiver (fee free) and you can use it to top up 5 different cards for free trial purposes.
