It is not a fungicide, though, is it? It will provide temporary relief/improvement but will not kill the fungal infection.

Apparently yes, it is. As well and being an antiseptic an antiviral and antiprotozal.

Fascinating. Thank you for finding and sharing that link. It wasn't overly compelling though and needs further study. Not sure how one would be be confident of obtaining a version comparable to that found to have efficacy. Or whether or not the effects would apply to the particular fungal infections in scope. Also noted that largely the outcomes were to inhibit growth rather than reverse other than in very select cases. Absolutely worth trying seriously.

Of all the over the counter ones I've found only excilor works 3.3 ml solution , not the pens , normally cheapest on eBay or Amazon

Both affected nails have regrowth , you need to use it for 6 months or longer. As it takes a while to show results

  • Tea tree oil worked for me too.

I filed down the affected bit put 2-3 drops on a tiny bit of cotton wool and bandaged it to my nail to soak overnight each evening for about 10 days the worst bit went yellow and came away (ewww!) I then carried on treating once or twice a week whilst the damage grew out (couple of months)
A bit of a faff, but cheap

OH had fungal nail on a toenail. Ended up with oral tablets from the doctor in the end as the only thing that cleared it up.

To give you an idea of how slowly nails grow, I dropped a plate on the nailbed of my big toe at the end of May, the white mark and dried blood under the nail are still about 4mm from growing out. You could spend a fortune on over the counter remedies in this time.

  • I tried everything, seriously, everything, over a 20 year period, including tablets from the doctor about 15 years ago. The nails were truly awful, all nails affected, meaning I didn't want to go swimming/ wear open toed sandals or even have my OH see them in the bath/shower. It made me feel very down.

Finally went back to the doctor, and got more tablets prescribed - they must have been different from the ones I had 15 years ago, as they worked fantastically. I needed to be on them for a year, but there was a visible difference after a couple of months. However, the doctor made it very clear that this was a one-off treatment, and I needed to make sure I was doing the right things to prevent it happening again.
