I'm not massively fussed about the asbestos element per se, I'm most curious about the best way to achieve a good result.

If it just gets skimmed over isn't there a danger the plaster will seperate from the original ceiling over time?

No. Plasterers do this all the time. Providing a decent coat of PVA is put on the artex, it won't come off.

Would the coving need to come off for the ceiling to be reskimmed?

    No, not normally

Personally I use Bluegrit on artex as it is low suction, PVA when over setting plaster

Well I said probably because the OP said it was heavy finish. Also coving is not expensive so why skimp on a proper job

our ceilings needed doing as well and builder said its best to put up new plasterboards on top (covering existing artex ceiling) and skim the new plasterboards. seems a lot more work and more costs involved. I'm worried with new plasterboard going up will make the ceiling lower but he said only 12mm!

    what do you guys think?

It shouldn't make a noticeable difference but you *will* need the coving removing and re-doing.

We recently had Artex in our hall/stairs/landing skimmed over. We wanted to keep the existing coving as it was original 1920s, quite intricate. Luckily the coving had a good deep lip, but even so the plasterer had to remove the high spots from the Artex. If the coving had been plain and cheap to replace then I suspect it would have been easier to remove and replace it.

That thread's a bit worrying in the light of my post above! Fingers crossed we'll be OK. It was skimmed about two months back, and all is well so far....
