Removing Atrex

I'm not massively fussed about the asbestos element per se, I'm most curious about the best way to achieve a good result.
If it just gets skimmed over isn't there a danger the plaster will seperate from the original ceiling over time?
No. Plasterers do this all the time. Providing a decent coat of PVA is put on the artex, it won't come off.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -

our ceilings needed doing as well and builder said its best to put up new plasterboards on top (covering existing artex ceiling) and skim the new plasterboards. seems a lot more work and more costs involved. I'm worried with new plasterboard going up will make the ceiling lower but he said only 12mm!
what do you guys think?:beer:0 -

It shouldn't make a noticeable difference but you *will* need the coving removing and re-doing.0 -

We recently had Artex in our hall/stairs/landing skimmed over. We wanted to keep the existing coving as it was original 1920s, quite intricate. Luckily the coving had a good deep lip, but even so the plasterer had to remove the high spots from the Artex. If the coving had been plain and cheap to replace then I suspect it would have been easier to remove and replace it.0

That thread's a bit worrying in the light of my post above! Fingers crossed we'll be OK. It was skimmed about two months back, and all is well so far....0 -
