How to switch from gas fire to electric fire?

Hi!
I am wildly out of my element on these sorts of home tasks, and so this might seem like a total no-brainer to most!
Currently we have a gas fire and we'd like to replace it with an electric fire.
The gas fire doesn't work and isn't safe to use so we haven't been using it. Plus we keep the TV above the fireplace and the room isn't really that cold, so we only want to use it as a little bit of extra heat occasionally.
This includes a hearth, mantle and surround that we'd like to also replace.
I guess the main question is, how do we start?
Many thanks in advance!
Adrian.

You'd start by getting a registered gas installer to safely remove the gas fire and cap off the supply to it.If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
just a quick follow up!
Many thanks for the advice, the gas man has just been round and sorted that part of the job!
Turns out the next thing will be taking the surround away, which can essentially be crowbarred away since whoever installed it last time did an awful sort of glueing job where it isn't flush with the wall. This will lead on to needing a plasterer to sort out the area behind all of that.
The hearth that its stood on will also need taking away and that'll mean we need a new carpet.
Once it's all cleaned up by the builder/plasterer person, they'll also help with installing an inset electric fire.
So I think we have some sort of roadmap now whereas we were completely stumped what the first move should be before.
Thanks again!0
