Two types of electricity ?

A follow up to a previous question.

We have a smart meter installed, and the electricity supplier is kind enough to provide an hourly analysis of electriicity consumption on their website. The hourly consumption (kwh), except for the odd anomaly, appears to reflect what we use, but the daily total (also kwh) on which we are billed appears to be an entirely different (much higher) figure.

On collecting further information the problem might be a faulty water pump.

Is it possible that the smart meter collects its hourly consumption information by looking at the current in one wire, but measures the daily consumption in a different place ?

Daily cost is made up of the number of units times the unit charge plus a daily standing charge which is fixed . The addition of the standing charge will make the difference ?
  • You don't have a two rate / economy 7 meter do you, and are only reading the hourly daytime rate units?

My smart meter shows the daily usage inclusive of standing charges but it does not include V.A.T or any duel fuel discount, so maybe the difference is the 5% Vat which is added separately

The meter, or rather the website, does not show anything to do with money - it is all about kwh with no standing charge or tax involved.

Somehow there are two different versions of the electricity consumption (daily and hourly - one about ten times the other) and both versions should in theory come direct from the meter.

The problem seems to have disappeared about the time we replaced a water pump (to a well) which is why I am asking if a meter could in practice measure two different circuits (presumably one to the neutral and one to earth).

Smart meter "in house displays ", show the daily and weekly usage in money , its one of their big selling points that they know your your kwh tariff and can calculate your usage in hard cash. If you have a smart meter, the supplier should have given you a plug in monitor .You do not have to go to the website for this info as many people do not have internet connection with smart meters.Smart meters only measure the total level of consumption.

The OP is asking questions about a non UK situation. They have not in the 2 questions asked on this forum said where in the world they are, actual type of meter, supply company, tariff.
