I'm actually reading Jane Eyre at the mo. This is a re-read for me and, like you with Rebecca, I read it initially a long time ago. I really don't remember any of Jane's younger years so feel like I'm reading it afresh. Will let you know if see the echoes. xx
    Inspired by Jane Eyre:

6/10. I started reading this mid-January, but lost momentum :o . A great idea in theory but many of the short stories were difficult to get into.

Last night I finished Rebecca (Daphne du Maurier) - for my book group tonight.
I thought I'd read it before, years ago, and was not looking forward to it as I remembered not enjoying it.
Well, I think I must have given up on it the first time. This time, again, I was really not liking it until about half way through, but then it seemed to really take off, and I couldn't put it down.
Once I got to the end, I appreciated all the slow lead-up, the building of tension, etc. And concluded there was a lot more to it than I'd thought.
Some echoes of Jane Eyre even!

No!! I hate Jane Eyre and I love du Maurier's books - I feel a bit faint that they have been mentioned in the same sentence :rotfl:

Our literary taste do change, whether they mature, or get more juvenile, who knows.

I loved reading Lord of the Rings as a teen, as an adult, not so much. There have been a few others too. Brian Bates - Way of Wyrd, was ok as a teen. Read as an adult i thought it was great.

The likes of jane Eyre, Wuthering heights etc, have never appealed to me.

I agree tastes change over time. I loved Irvine Welsh as a teenager, but a few years ago when I tried to read one of his books I couldn't, the violence was too much.. I might be able to read it again in the future.

I finished The Heart of What Was Lost, which has whet my appetite for the new trilogy. The first book is due in June, so not long to wait.

Thanks to this thread I looked on Amazon last night and nearly bought His Bloody Project, I'm glad I didn't though because when I went to choose my next book from the pile I found I already have it. I can't read it for a while though, because I've already read two books beginning with 'H'.

I'm now reading Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children, which I'm loving, I couldn't put it down last night and I'm about halfway through.

I think it'll be Roots next.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

A freind mentioned Miss Peregrine a few years ago. Downloaded it, but never got round to reading.

It's still on my kindle, so may give it a go.

I really liked it, it went in a different direction to what I was expecting. I read it in two sittings, it was a page turner.

I want to read the sequel now, but that's another one beginning with H...

I'm a couple of hundred pages into Roots. I couldn't see how the author could know so many details of Kunta Kinte's life so googled. According to Wiki, not only was his research highly flawed, a chunk of the book was plagiarised. So I'm just reading it as pure fiction. It's interesting and easy to read, so far.
