  • What do you weigh, what percentage is two stone?
13 stone. BMI is 25 so I want to get to 11 stone which will give me a comfortable BMI. I've seen my weight creep up over the couple of years so I need to put a stop to it!

Well I would look at losing just one stone, or about 7kg.

Get down to that, small adjustments to your diet and activity, then once that is an easy weight to keep, then see if a few more little changes can get rid of another stone.

As a percentage you're being far to hard on yourself, the result will be disappointment, and you will give up and gain weight.

So aim for one stone loss, small changes to your diet and exercise and meet your new target. Then take it from there.

    Good luck fj

your post is very patronising bigfred. You don't know OP, so have no idea what is right for them to lose or not. If they want to lose 2 stones, then who are you to tell them they shouldn't?

Maybe they are aiming to shed two stones in 2 years rather than one stone in 6 months. OP, do what you think is right for you.
  • My psoriasis has been loads better since I gave up bread too.

Try using sweet potatoes as you would jacket potatoes.
Much better for you than regular potatoes.

The potato thing is not really correct. White is actually more nutrient dense than sweet. There is no reason to prefer one over the other unless you don't like the taste.

Give up bread if you wish but you won't lose weight any quicker than if you were to lose the same amount of calories from another type of food. Low carb in this regard is a myth, studies show no statistically sig benefit.

If you wish to reduce white grains and refined foods for health reasons ( inflammation etc )then you are onto something.

There are a couple of significant differences between white potatoes and sweet potatoes.

White potatoes are members of the nightshade family. Sweet potatoes aren't. For most people this won't matter but if you have problems with your gut or if you have an auto immune condition then it is best to avoid foods from the nightshade group.......white potatoes, aubergines, peppers, tomatoes - although cooked tomatoes are less. Problematical than raw tomatoes.

The other significant difference is that sweet potatoes are rich in vitamin A.

I have. Been going strong for about 1.5 years now without traditional bread.

It makes a difference but you need to take a holistic approach to your diet to see a real change.

    Are you looking after OP?

How do you know I don't know the OP?

I think you're the patronising one here!

Aybe the OP can say who is the patronising one.

Anyway, the point I was making was that people fail because they set over ambitious targets. Not just in weight control but in most areas of life

When I was at Uni one of the top students just lost it in the third year. His practical for his dissertation was a disaster. So he dropped out to become a monk. He would have still gained a 1st class honours degree with distinction regardless of the outcome of his dissertation.

    Cheers fj
  • All comments are welcome and I appreciate all your views. I do see this as a long term change and not just a diet.

My father has lost 6 stone since august purely cutting out bread and drinking more water. He was however eating 6 slices per day.

I think one of the things to consider is that it's probably not just the bread you'll be cutting out. What do you have on/in it, e.g. butter? Presumably you'll no longer be having that either. Personally I haven't given it up but we do almost exclusively eat thins rather than "bread" these days.

I expect that you'll find just giving up bread, unless you're consuming rather a lot and the rest of your diet is great, might not give you the results you're looking for. You could keep a food diary for a week and see how much you're actually eating. It might be worth calculating the macro-nutrients you consumed for that week to see how your diet compares to what your body needs. Once you have that information you can make some adjustments.
