Free Newsgroup reader

Hi

Is there any completely free Newsgroup readers out there? I am currently using UsenetReplayer but it's not very good

I use Mozilla Thunderbird to read my Uni Newsgroups, never had any problems but I've also never used anything else so no idea if I'm behind the times or anything!

Microplanet Gravity. Far easier than Thunderbird as you don't have to keep applying view/thread settings to each group you subscribe to and it doesn't truncate names/create them out of alphabetical order.

Does this program allow you to preview posts?

Currently I use Thunderbird as my newsreader, not that I view many newsgroups nowadays. Prior to that I always used FreeAgent which was very good but I've just checked and they've discontinued it to concentrate on the paid for versions. You may still be abel to download it from somewhere though.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Well you can either set it to just download headers or the full message. It's also great for downloading files from Usenet too.
  • Sorry i am a bit of a novice at this - what news server should I use? Do i have to pay for the newserver?
  • Depends what you want.

Your ISP should have a news server (NTLWorld does, for example).

You can also Google 'free newsgroups'.

Free ones have lower bandwidth and shorter retention times. However, pay-newsgroups are actually quite cheap and have much greater bandwidth and retention (plus many more groups).

If you require access to newsgroups, there is a list of free open access news servers available at:

Out of interest, will I be able to access the NTL cable usegroups on a virgin cable connection?
At home, we had NTL cable before virgin took over, and the ntl groups had several ones you coculd post binaries, though looking through the virgin ones, you can't post binaries :(
