Changing surname on driving license

Hey everyone,

I do know how to go about changing my surname on my licence but the problem is I had my wallet stolen yesterday and now I'm not sure on whether I need to order a replacement before changing my surname on it. Can anyone help.

Thanks

I would imagine that a replacement should be ordered in the same name as issued , once recieved you should then reapply with new name and proof of change of surname

  • You might have had a stroke of luck - I'm not sure, but isn't a name change free of charge? If so, then just tell them about it and forget about the lost licence, for which you'd have to pay for a replacement (£20?). Incidentally, I'm wondering if you're actually obliged to inform them of a name change. Of course maybe you want to, but anyway, I'm sure someone will have a definitive answer on this one.

Just phone DVLA. They're pretty helpful. Better than random advice on here!

so the answer is that you have to Send DVLA your old driving licence along with the right application form and any supporting documents to change your name or gender.

in the OPs case they have lost their licence (stolen/misplaced etc) so they need to apply for a replacement licence in the name it was issued m then when recieved , apply for a name change (free of charge)

    From that page...
If you can’t send your old driving licence
You can still apply if your old licence has been lost, stolen or destroyed. You’ll have to say what happened to it when you fill in the form.

    But:

If you can’t send your old driving licence

You can still apply if your old licence has been lost, stolen or destroyed. You’ll have to say what happened to it when you fill in the form.

However, it's unclear from this if a fee would be payable. Anyone know?

It's still a name change, so it's still free.

    Um...........

  • I've just done this. You essentially renew your licence and on the form it will ask about changes. Add the new name along with the evidence (marriage certificate etc.) and your good to go. As you've lost your licence, you'll have to pay £20 for a new one.
