Halloween costume help please!

I quite fancy having a stab at making a Halloween costume for my 2 & half year old son this year - does anyone have any ideas what I could make? I know I could buy a ready made outfit from Woolies quite cheaply but I'd like to have a go at making one myself.

The only ones I can think of so far are: spider, devil, Dracula, bat or a pumpkin. How I'd do them I don't know though! Any tips gratefully received :)

  • Have a look at www.familyfun.go.com
It has a whole craft section on costumes!!! Seemed quite easy

  • You could maybe try in your local market - our local one has a fabric stall which sells cheap off cuts of material. Always handy for making things!
Needing all the money I can for university!!
  • For the last three years I have turned into a witch each Halloween! I snaffled a large thick black curtain my Mother had hung up behind a door to keep the draft out ... I cut a hole in it for my head and stitched down the sides under my arms ... ta dah .. one dress.
Then I bought some of those shiny coloured metallic stars from the stationers ... I got em cheap ... 4 packs a £1 ... (well, I don't like spending money!) ... I stitched those all over my dress and they really shone when I opened the door to the trick or treaters!! I got lots of comments!! Mindst you, it isn't often you see a 34 year old dressed as a witch is it?!! *LOL*

You can always get green face paint in Home Bargains for a pound or so too ... and I had a black eyeliner pencil in my makeup bag to draw a spider on my face ...

The first year I did it, I found it chilly to be opening the door in the evening just in my curtain dress, so I cadged another black curtain ... thread elastic round the top, threaded a thin piece of material through and that was my cape ... it sounds such a mish mash, but put together it looks great! I have even had someone ask me if they can borrow it this year for their Halloween Party!!
  • .... ooopss, so I must have skimmed over the bit where you typed, "for my 2 and a half year old son" ... sorry about that! Still .. nothing stopping you getting dressed up too, is there?

How about the Grim Reaper? There are plenty of plastic scythes on sale in the cheap shops .. and you could get some grey face paint for him ... a grey curtain done like the cape I made .... that kind of thing .... the best little lad last year was one who came as a wizard (not Harry Potter!) ... I wouldn't have thought it would be too hard to make that kind of costume .. some painted card for his hat stuck with cut out stars ... a cape with those shiny stars stitched on it ... you could buy a little cuddly toy owl for next to nothing in a charity shop and stitch it so it sits on his shoulder .... *L* ....

    Hi
My son was a zombie last year. I used ketchup as blood; lots on bandages, just rub it in and then dry on the radiator. For clothes I used a large, old white shirt which I ripped/ketchuphed and tarnished with some soil. For his face I used some face paints and then wrapped part of his head with the 'bloody' bangages.
He looked great and even won a prize for it, it is also quite easy to do since I am not particularly talented in this area.

  • How about a mummy?
  • Many thanks for all the replies, I quite like the idea of a wizard. He's really blonde so I couldn't do him as Harry Potter though. It should be really easy with dark clothing, black cape with stars on, a pointy hat and Bob's your Uncle :D

  • Pirates are very popluar for boys on halloween and easy to make with stripey blue t shirts - rolled up jeans, black waistcoat and eye patch and a cheap paper pirates hat. You could even go as far as a parrot on his shoulder!
