Does anyone know of any of the above title to this thread if there are any free programs about? I downloaded one saying free which has turned out to be $30 in price to get passed the trail period.

    mp3directcut will cut, join and fade mp3 files without re-encoding.
    And it's free.
    Works with Windows or Linux (with Wine).

    Ocenaudio. Not as comprehensive as Audacity but quicker and much simpler for routine tasks like those you mention.

    Audacity can only work on decoded waveforms, so audio quality will be degraded if you try editing MP3 files.

    I've used MP3Trim to trim MP3 files losslessly. There must be similar software to join & fade compressed audio without needing to transcode.
