Should I feel guilty?

I've just asked my neighbour to turn the music down.
It was pretty loud heavy metal. We are apartment neighbours.
The sound could just be overheard through my ear plugs.
It isn't the first time, but it's not daily or weekly either.
Though it's the first time I had to mention it during the occurance.
I had to ring the doorbell as knocking hard didn't work.
He's says that no problem it's over.
I said no continue, just turn it down a notch.
Not sure if they have it on
But I can't hear anything.
I shouldn't have to wear plugs in my flat (I don't all the time, just bouts of noise)
And I shouldn't have to tell anyone
I'm pretty quiet myself
Probably a bit noise sensitive too
He's a pretty ok guy otherwise
Tells me to let him know if it's too loud, etc
Though at times like these, I've found myself on right move
Though my flat has gone up a lot, I shouldn't have to spend 4-5k moving to avoid this
And who knows what I would get next
Better the devil you know
Can't afford a house
But funny that I just brought him into my bedroom which borders his lounge and it was at the point the music had just dipped
Oh well, think he got the gist of what I was saying
Am i over reacting?
Its Friday 1.48am and im exhausted

You've set a boundary, presumably in a reasonable way.
Don't feel guilty.
In 1992 I had my neighbours knock on my front door at 7.30am on a Sunday as I tested out my new high.
I was in the wrong. I turned it down and popped round later with a bottle of wine for them.0 -
Hey, no need to feel guilty! Because your neighbor was doing noise pollution and its your right to stop the music.0

You could just hear the sound through your ear plugs? It's not a weekly occurrence, it's Party season and you complain. I think you should have cut him more slack. As you say, you could have someone worse next door, could he?0

Naaaaaa I don't feel guilty
I should. Be affected and put up with others party season ?
It just needing turning down, they could still.enjoy themselves with moderate rather than LOUD sound and affect people next to and below them just 'cus it's partayyyyy season'0 -
If it was a party, then they should have done the whole trick of inviting you.0

I feel for you - I haven't been able to enjoy my garden this summer because both neighbours (though one is worse) think that nice weather = radios/phone music for hours, at volumes clearly audible even through closed double-glazed windows. I also don'tr want to have to wear earplugs too often at home, but that is what I was reduced to this summer just gone. Asking nicely didn't have an effect, either.0

You're quite entitled to ask him to turn it down. Why should you have to tolerate the noise? Why do some people think that everyone in the street should listen to their music? Often whilst they are trying to watch tv, read, chat, or sleep.
If your music can be heard outside of your home, be it next door who can hear it, or people outside on the street, that means it's TOO LOUD.
I find it incredibly arrogant and obnoxious to play music loudly, so people can hear it through the party wall, or through the windows. It smacks of attention-seeking. Why do you think the world should have to hear YOUR music? My friend lives next to a 50 year old divorced man who thinks he's 21, and plays loud rap music at weekends for 5-6 hours. It can be heard from 300 yards down the road. Then again, he is an attention seeking showy git who laughs really loudly when he is watching comedy, and roars loudly when he watching sport. It's like 'me me me, look at me!'
Get headphones FGS. :mad:cooeeeeeeeee :j :wave:0 -
I don't see why you should have to wear ear plugs in your own home to cut out noise from the neighbours - regardless of what season it is.You could just hear the sound through your ear plugs? I don't really understand why the OP is asking if he should feel guilty.
Loud music - loud enough to hear when you're wearing ear plugs at 1:48am - is totally inconsiderate.0 -
It's definitely inconsiderate, but it does appear to be a growing problem. I use headphones when listening to music, and would warn neighbours if we're planning a party (which is never), but the same consideration never seems to occur to others.
My neighbour's voice is so loud that I've been privy to her side of conversations that should definitely be kept private, plus I always know who's won Strictly/X-Factor/Bake Off as soon as it happens. The previous neighbour was a lot quieter. I'm just hoping that these ones move out sometime in the near future, unlikely though it looks right now, because we sure as hell can't afford to move!0
