Getting into a chain - how bad?

Hi all

We have a house (London) and want to upgrade, which means we will end up in a chain. My question is - how bad is it? Is it worth selling first and moving into a rental? What were your experiences with chains?

    Property chains are a part of life unfortunately. Most will not be problematic, some can cause hugh problems. Even if you move into rented you could still end up being part of chain, while paying rent for the priviledge. All you can really do is make sure that you complete everything on time so you don't become the weak link and hope everyone else does the same.

    You are always going to be part of a chain, even if it is just you and your buyer. Things can wrong at any point in the chain and the more people the more likely it is to go wrong, but most go off ok, just take longer than expected, but even our 'chain free' purchase (us as FTB, seller with no chain) had many bumps in the road and took 4 months, here as my friends 6 house chain completed in less time.

    Nearly all property sales involve chains, most go through fine, some don't.

    I certainly wouldn't consider it worth the upheaval of moving twice, changing address twice, dealing with a landlord/letting agent etc. just to avoid a chain.

    ^^ This.

    As has been said mostly chains aren't a problem, occasionally things go wrong with them, in moving twice you bring more stress upon yourself regardless of what happens with the chain.

    It's hard enough to find a house you like, let alone one that's chain free. Chances are in the future the one you want will be in a chain. You might as well have one below you too.

    As Person_one says, moving twice would be far more of a pain...
