When someone is suddenly on your mind

I'll start by saying I have a religious background and I'm trying to get some thoughts that aren't, umm, other worldly.

What do people make of sudden thoughts and events that make someone play on your mind? I don't just mean say hearing a song that reminds you of a time in the past, but a collection of random things over a period of days including seeing the initials of a person from your past? I mean is that even a thing for the secular world?

    Possibly OCD over thinking things?
  • I think that if you had a strong connection with that person then I would contact them or at least try to find out if they are ok.

The human mind is pretty amazing. Its certainly not fully understood.

One thing that has become apparent is that the brain tends to like patterns something you might no notice in day to day life but becomes prevalent when your try things like optical illusions.

This is part of the reason why we see objects in clouds or spoons on mars.

For most people to the letter P N E together doesnt mean that much, they wouldnt notice it on a reg plate. Being from preston and a Preston North End fan, i will spot it immediately. Likewise i would my own initials.

Thoughts of other people will always pop up and there could be triggers that youre unaware of. You say songs that remind you of someone but what about smells, feeling, touch etc.

I work in the care industry, used to look after a lady with dementia, quite bad. Lady was regularly violent and unpleasant. Saw a picture of her dancing so we took her to a ballroom. The transformation was unbelievable, i had tears in my eyes (25 yo apathetic male). She glammed herself up, huge smiles, and just danced all over the floor. She couldnt remember ever dancing before, she had never mentioned it before and had never been to the venue before. Turns out she was a local dance champion (not sure what dance), but something triggered in her brain that released the feeling of eurphoria across her whole body. Something you would assume with the level of dementia she had little control over.

Generally find its better to just roll with it accepting your brain can be a little deceitful (normally due to evolutionary reasons). Id take it as meaning the brain is unique. I certainly dont believe in fate or destiny.

One of the people I used to share a flat with at University was Syrian. For obvious reasons I often wonder how she is now, and what's become of her son :(

When planning to buy a Euromillions ticket I see numbers while driving around. Those numbers amounted to !!!! all. Same with the initials
    Mortgage (Nov 15): £79,950 | Mortgage (May 19): £71,754 | Mortgage (Sep 22): £0
    Cashback sites: £900 | £30k in 2016: £30,300 (101%)

That sounds like confirmation bias where we tend to notice some things and don't notice others. For example, I was thinking of my deceased mum the other day and I noticed lots of things when I was out shopping that reminded me of her. But of course I would have also seen lots and lots of things that did not remind me of her, but of course I did not really register those things. You must see lots and lots of initials each day, but you just happen to notice the ones that are the same as the person you were thinking about.

I appreciate all your thoughts. I've done some digging today and it would seem his wife is using a new surname. Think it's best I let this lie, the consequences could be too great.
