British Gas smart meter - change suppliers?

I sort out my mum's utilities for her. She recently got a British Gas smart meter and is happy with it as it shows her the usage of different things etc.

Now her fixed rate is ended and I want to find her a better deal as I now have her annual kwh. But she is happy with the smart meter and says she wants to stay with British Gas even though she knows she will be paying higher payments. If she leaves British Gas what features will the smart meter lose, is it just the ability to sending automatic reading to British Gas or will it be rendered useless?

It will simply become a "meter" just like the old fashioned ones with no remote display.

Is there no alternative supplier who can keep the present British Gas smart reader facility?

Sainsbury's, they are white label BG.

I have done a cost comparison with Sainsburys and there is no savings to be made by joining them - Gas 8036 Electric 3537, but there is £100 with fist utility.

If I manage to persuade my mum to change her supplier will first utility supply a new smart meter?
