Car insurance query

Hi all,

My insurance renewal has come through for my car and this reflects where I will be on the 24th of January 2017 when the policy renews, such as 10 years no claims etc.

I am currently looking at purchasing a new vehicle on the 3rd of January 2017.

My query is, when looking for insurance for the new vehicle, can I use the renewal details?
i.e. can I say I have 10 years no claims when I fall about three weeks short?

only full years NCD count so if you change your insurance provider before the end of the current insurance year, you have 9 full years not 10 (and will be issued with evidence of 9)
Assuming you are changing your current car for the new car you may be cheaper paying the admin fee and having the current policy changed to cover the new car for the 3 weeks and give you that other year
You may well have fees if you choose to take a new policy elsewhere and end your current policy early
If the new car is in addition to the current car then you cannot use the NCD on 2 policies so the new car would have zero NCD

In order to take out a brand new policy on 3/1/17 with any NCD you must cancel your existing policy. (You cannot use NCD on 2 policies simultaneously)

Cancellation will usually involve a cancellation charge. (And you will only have 9 years NCD, as this years NCD won't be awarded as the policy ended early)

Alternatively if you want to have the 10 years then put your new car on your existing policy (though this may involve an admin fee on top of any premium change)

Find out the cheapest option ("Losing" a year's ncd if you cancel the existing policy early will probably make little or no difference to the new premium)

Contact your current insurer and switch the car to them, with only a few weeks left it should be fairly cheap.
But do check they will cover that vehicle first, or maybe delay buying the car for a few weeks?

  • I've been told, by various insurers, that there is virtually no difference in NCD between years 6-10. Once you have reached five years, you are more or less getting the maximum discount.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.
