If I claim through my insurance for a write off which was not my fault, am i losing my remaining months of insurance? Will they refund me half my premium if I'm halfway through?

If I claim through their insurance, will my insurance continue, all be it with a slight adjustment depending on the next car?

If at all possible for various reasons try to claim directly off the other parties insurer but notify your own. Make them 100% clear it is for notification only.

Insurance is annual, you may choose to pay monthly but the sum is based on the whole year and you won't get a refund after you've claimed.

You can claim directly from the other party's insurer but will have to record and notify as a claim to your insurer and in future.

Depends on the terms of your policy.

Some insurers have a clause that the policy terminates on a total loss, but most allow you to transfer the remaining months to a replacement vehicle, subject to them covering you with that vehicle.

If you cancel a policy that has paid out you get nothing back (and need to have paid the whole years premium too)

If you claim through the other party, you won't have an excess to deal with.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

This is no longer an enforceable condition.

You now can always keep your policy after a write off to use on a replacement vehicle ( though as always with changing cars you need to ensure any new car is acceptable to your insurer before you buy it)

But check the time period allowed to put the replacement on cover as this may be limited (whichever insurer you claim off)

I had a total loss fault claim with swift cover (theft) and they gave me 7 days to get a new car and continue with the policy while the claim was still not settled, was really impressed with how they handled the whole claim process.

Thank you for the replies, hopefully by the sounds of it they will continue to insure a replacement, after all it wasn't my fault... Happy new year.
