Hi the following question may sound like a newbie question which I need an answer on before I continue drilling.
It is a semi-detached house and the partition walls in the house are they concrete/brick walls or wood/stud walls?
I understand outside walls are concrete/brick
The walls connecting to my next door neighbour house what construction?
thanks,

It really depends. There may be internal load bearing walls made of masonry or other walls made of all sorts of stuff from stud walls with plasterboard to stramboard which is basically made of straw.
How old is the house?0 -
They will be masonry walls. Why are you suspecting they may not be?
Could they have been 'dot and dabbed'? In which case you may need special fixings if you are planning on fixing anything substantial to the wall. You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose.0 -
Have a look in the loft the party wall construction will be visible here.0

They could be brick/block or stud walls. More likely the latter for newer builds but old houses can have newer internal modifications and partition walls which will more likely be a stud wall.
Knocking on the wall can help you determine if it's solid but if it sounds hollow it could be a stud wall or a dot and dabbed masonry wall.
If in doubt you could drill a small exploratory hole.
I'm a fan of Rawl 4All fixings which are designed to go into any material, hollow or solid.0 -
Ok Rawl 4 All fixings are the best fixings a person can buy?
Yeah like to mount some surround sound speakers on wall no more than 5kg.
Is there a way I can detect stud/metal in walls without buying a dedicated stud detector?0 -
Rawl 4 All plugs are good quality and useful because they are versatile but if you know you have a masonry wall they offer no real advantage over any other decent wall plug of the appropriate size. I do think they are particularly useful for dot and dab walls though.0

Take a look under the floorboards, you will be able to see the top of the downstairs wall if it's made of bricks or concrete.Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0
