Cali is a great city in Colombia: the world capital for salsa, and lots more fun.
Orange County is a depressing dump: basically Milton Keynes with smog.0 -

hi, just come back from 2 weeks in Leucadia/Encinitas. about 30 minutes north of San Diego and an hour to and hour and a half from LA, depending where you want to go in LA.
I am just planning next year's return and have rebooked our beach home in Leucadia, which was fantastic and owned by a lovely and kind renter who thought of everything. she is on www.VRBO.com, which is a good site for rentals. the beach house is in a gated community called Seabluffe, right on a surfing beach.
we went with 2 teen girls and it was a great location to stay. preferred San Diego to LA, but we still went to LA a couple of days to Hollywood and Universal, and even took a roadtrip to Vegas for a one night stay. the girls had expert surfing lessons on the beach 2 minutes away, and no one wanted to come home.
because it is already booked, we can only do the last 8 days of next year's trip at the beach house, so we are currently looking at San Clemente, closer to LA for our first week.
Having been to a few of the beach towns now, i don't think i would go further north than Dana Point, which we drove through and looked lovely, as they tend to get pricy and a bit too upmarket for our modest beach bum needs. if you are looking for a base to go out and explore, you don't need to be spending stupid money, although we do like to be somewhere nice. i think you get more luxury for your money from Dana Point down the coast towards San Diego, rather than up the coast LA area.
go to www.local.live.com for help with locations and distances, and let me know if you have any more questions.
by the way, we had a ball...!Blonde jokes are one-liners so men can remember them...;)0 -
