Internet dropping, windows 10

Hi

Ive always had issues with windows 10 and my internet dropping

Im on a wireless network, in a room next to the routher, all devices in the house, (TV, several phones, ipads etc all connect to it fine) it always my windows 10 PC that loses connection until I sometimes have to restart router, troubleshoot the device/disable/enable etc

I had this issue when I first go the pc a couple of years ago with its built in wireless card. I bought a wirelss dongle which works better but still drops in and out when it wants to

Ive updated drivers etc, wondered if there is any other obvious reason I hasnt thought of?

Cheers

First thought - do you have one of those routers that allow you to change channels? If so, maybe doing so will help. Perhaps a neighbour is connected to the same channel and it's causing interference. Latest routers apparently have the capability to do this themselves, so maybe that's not the solution (or even possible).

Second thought. If you mean your PC is near the router, would using a cable to connect to it, rather than wifi, be feasible? It shouldn't be necessary of course and no use if you want to move around but just a thought. Sorry, reread your post - your PC is not 'near' the router. Hopefully others will help (but a quick search shows many others have this problem).

This is a known issue with WIN10.

Try running an elevated administrator command prompt and type the following command and press enter

    sfc /scannow

Wait a few minutes for it to finish and see if it reports any problems.

To get an admin command prompt, right click bottom left on the start button then click on Command Prompt (Admin)

Thanks, Im just tryinng another solution which I hadnt come across before

Ive turned the "allow this computer to turn off this device to save power" setting in device manager, seems to be ok at the moment for the wirless dongle one at the moment, apparently it assumes automatically that its a laptop, but didnt do anything for the built in wireless card, typically

If this fails, I will try the above, thanks!
  • A few weeks ago I was unable to get an internet connection on my laptop after a Windows 10 update. After trawling through the internet on other devices in my house, and reading technical solutions i couldn't understand and didn't feel comfortable trying, I found someone's blog that said if all else fails do a full network reset.

So, I set up a restore point and backed up my laptop just in case something awkward happened, and did the full network reset. It worked with all passwords, apps, search history etc still in tact. However, a day and a half later I lost the internet again. A programmer colleague at work had said Microsoft were working on the bug. I guess they found a solution and Windows 10 updated again. This time, no networks were showing at all and my router couldn't find any.

After another surprisingly short trawl through the internet someone said there was an extra network adapter in their device manager. Luckily I had been into the device manager so many times I immediately spotted the offender, Real Tex RTL8188ct (I only noted the first few characters). I deleted it, restarted my computer and voila, internet again. I haven't had any problems since then.

OP, I hope you get yours sorted soon.
