Thanks for all your advice, just to update - The Gas Board condemned is, there was a leak at the end of our street and we reported it so they check our property, the guys saw it and passed out:rotfl: so it was not British Gas. Even made me sign a form saying I would not use it. Its over 15 years old system boiler. It has a faulty fan but may have other faulty parts. Homework has shown me it would cost £150 for a part but no guarantee its going to solve it. Tried all the usual avenues. Now looking to "rent" a boiler but they sound too good to be true - Anyone have any experience of these - cost / benefits etc - Once again thanks
The Gas Board is just the old name for British Gas. Well worth getting a second opinion like January did.0 -
If it was anything to do with British Gas then get a local independent in to service it. Did they remove a part so you couldn't use it? That is what they do when you really shouldn't use it.0

Hi and welcome, jaysan.
Definitely check charities, this link might help: http://grants-search.turn2us.org.uk/?gclid=CKGwlo6ro9ECFa4K0wod6HkKSA
Unfortunately I have been unable to find any free boiler scheme which does not require recipients to be on specific benefits. I am not conversant with credit unions/other forms of credit for those with a poor history but you are in the best place for such advice. If you are not in debt to your gas supplier, could it be worth asking them if they can suggest anything?
I have heard of these boiler renting schemes and think you would end up paying forever, rather than just over the odds but it may be the only way for you. I know A Shade Greener have such a scheme but it sounded dubious to us for this reason.
F plural YI, and apologies if this is not news to anyone, "The Gas Board" has not existed for decades and was, indeed, what British Gas were also known as however, if jaysan reported a gas leak and those who came to repair it condemned the boiler, that would have been National Grid (formerly Transco) or their agents, not BG. National Grid are responsible for the maintenance and repair of the pipes/infrastructure which conveys gas to homes/businesses; they are not a supplier like BG, Eon, whoever and therefore (one assumes) have no reason to condemn your boiler just because they want to sell you a new one and are not allowed to use factored parts. That is not what they do.
I would avoid Help Link like the plague, were I you. We had them quote for a new boiler back in the Spring as we also had a faulty part and our independent guy told us there was no guarantee replacing it would fix the boiler. He also said it was likely one thing after another would go wrong and we would still end up having to buy a new one anyway.
The Help Link representative set everyone of my considerable array of alarm bells ringing: It was amazing just how expensive their "free" scheme was; it would have cost us £1100+ before they even sent out a gas surveyor, whose report would have increased the price. When we told them, "no thanks", the price miraculously halved... In the end, we opted for BG as they had a half-price sale on at the time and, therefore, were cheaper than the independents we also asked to provide quotes. Yes, they were, not getting into that again, naysayers.
I wish you well and hope you can find the help you need quickly.0 -
Hi, have you tried 'Everlasting Boilers'? I rent a boiler from them, they installed a brand new boiler a couple of years ago when mine was on the blink, and I pay £25.00 per month.
When I had my old boiler I was paying £20.00 per month insurance for servicing, repair etc. This company services the boiler every six months and will repair/replace if anything goes wrong.
I can come out of the scheme at anytime if I want to buy my own boiler again, with no cost for them to remove 'their' boiler.
I just googled them, this is their link:

That's it, anxious_mum! From A Shade Greener. Thank you!0

Unfortunately if you're working there is no help. We had no boiler for over five years as ours flooded so was so much beyond repair we had to have our gas meter capped for safety. OH is working and I'm on benefits for severe disabilities but there was no help for us at all. We had to wait five years for OH's savings bond to mature before we could afford another but I just wanted to offer sympathy if no practical help. In the meantime, buy some convector heaters- it's amazing how warm they can be.*The RK and FF fan club* #Family*Don’t Be Bitter- Glitter!* #LotsOfLove ‘Darling you’re my blood, you have my heartbeat’ Dad 20.02.200

Check your local council website. In my region (west Yorkshire) there is some help available if you have children under 16 living with you, and you earn under £21k (or does that rule you out?). Do you have any credit available to you from your debt payoff?0

How much are you paying each month to cover your debts? Would skipping a month cover the cost of boiler? If it would, write to all your creditors and ask them for a month off - if you managed to keep up with your mortgage while dealing with your other debts they may give you permission to go into a month's arrears (which may extend the term of the mortgage, or need paying back within the year, or put your monthly costs up - ball's in their park what terms they deign to offer you).Mortgage

Jaysan, if you ever come back, I think the answers were here all the time.
This forum rocks, imho.0 -
Grants are available to anyone that has a boiler !!!!!
We only have a back boiler so are not eligible for any type of grant as our system is powered by wood burners feeding the rads. Does anyone know of any way a grant can be obtained please ?:j0
