The problem with credit cards (for me) is that I make a purchase and it is not taken from my bank account for several weeks. For instance, I paid for some train tickets well in advance for over £80 and it was not taken from me for about six weeks. I don't like large amounts "pending".

Personal preference. I delight in hanging on to my money months after the transaction. Ideally investing it to squeeze just a few pennies of extra interest. It becomes a way of life: A game $:o)

Not bothered about balancing the books exactly. But I find there is nothing worse than buying a (fairly) expensive gadget that I don't really need and then being constantly reminded that I still have to pay for it.

Setup the Credit card direct debit on another account (prefably one that pays interest). Then when you buy something on the card you can immediately transfer the money to this account so then it is "paid for" so you don't have to think about it.0 -
Funny thing is; last time I went to Asda I used the self service checkout and when I got home I found I had been charged twice for one item of Ice Cream (£1.50) I did not bother going back to re-claim it because it was Xmas eve and the place was pandemonium. Strictly speaking, I guess I over-charged myself. It is easily done.:)
I can't see how you could have charged yourself twice, as the place where you place scanned items is a weighing scale, which soon yells 'unidentified item in the bagging area' if you as much as move a bag to fit something into it.
If you have the receipt, complain anyway, as they may pay you double the error (Tesco do).0 -

Asda policy for overcharge is refund the difference and £2 gift card.0 -

Just to report that today the transaction has been voided. Moneyineptitude was correct.
"Teddysmum" I use the self-service checkout very infrequently. I started off badly by putting my purchases on the wrong side and had this voice booming at me, shouting about items in the bagging area. It went downhill from there and I scanned the ice cream twice, thinking that it had not registered the first time. But, as you say, I should have kept the receipt and got the over-payment back.
"Kernel Sanders" You make an interesting point about pre-paid rail tickets which I often get myself. With some train company's you can pick up your rail tickets using any of your personal bank cards whilst some other company's apparently require you to collect your tickets using the same card that you made the purchase with. This was pointed out on an MSE thread some months ago.0
