What do I do if I think the new laptop I bought from Argos has been used before?

Hi, I bought a new HP laptop for xmas 2016 and although it froxe on start up and another couple of minor problems I was quite happy with the purchase. When I went to delete the internet history I realised that there were two searches in June and September. I could have understood one of them as I reset the time (and maybe the date) but I couldn't understand why they were several months apart. Then I checked the C Drive Windows Performance and found three WMV clips that I don't believe are standard preloaded HP clips. There is also a notepad note dated June 16 that makes me believe there may have been a problem. I am concerned that this laptop has been used can a techie let me know if I should be concerned that this is not a brand new laptop. Can you advise me what my options are and should Argos compensate me for the amount of time that I have spent loading al my personal data onto this laptop.

On occasion for quality control purposes the manufacturer may fire up the unit and test it to ensure it is in full working order, before factory resetting it and packaging it back up.

This did used to be documented on the paraphernalia that came with the unit, whether they still do this I couldn't be sure.

The June date may not be much to worry about as these things are made by the bucketload and quite often sit on shelves for months on end before they get sold.

What were the WMV clips of and what was in the content of the Notepad file?
  • What happened when you turned it on? If it didn't go through the Windows set-up process and offer you the chance to create an account then it's been used before.

Just reset to factory settings and take it back for a refund. They don't owe you any compensation.

Froze on startup because it was still installing and running through the setup. It does that Sir/Madam.

Drives are imaged, they create one system and set it up and then create an image. They then test it thoroughly and if its all clear they use that image for every build after that date. You may find those same files on every one you buy.

3 clips that you dont believe are HP ones, they maybe HP ones or they maybe ones installed by windows 10.

If your paranoid about this wait until you wake the computer up one day and find games and apps have installed themselves without your permission.

Welcome to the world of Windows 10.
