Eight posts in then, we now finally know what the vehicle is.

Could be an issue with the LSD if it's fitted with one, could be just wear on the diff gears. Could be as simple as a brake pad shifting in the caliper carrier.

    9 posts in - what's an LSD?

Apparently not brakes nor suspension related. Does anyone know what this disk is likely to be? another name for it perhaps?

    Thank you all.

    Limited slip differential.

Do you know what a differential is, and how it works?

It allows the two wheels on that axle to rotate at different speeds to each other.
This is normally good, because it means you go round corners easily. But it's bad if one wheel is on slippery stuff, because it means that one wheel spins all the drive away, and the other wheel stays put.

So vehicles designed for off-road use sometimes have lockable differentials. This allows you to lock the two wheels together - you move, so long as one wheel has grip. Bad if you try and go round a corner, though...

Which is why vehicles designed as a compromise between on- and off-road have limited-slip diffs. One wheel spins a bit, the other one gets some power. The innards are much more complex, and depending on how that particular design works, it's not hard to see how you're getting the noise you are.

As long as it's just a noise, you should be fine. If it breaks up fully, you may well get a loud bang and not go any further. Presumably, you're running the vehicle until one good bill kills it, rather than maintaining it with long-term use in mind. This could well be that one good bill.

Finding a replacement diff for a Japan-only car such as yours might well prove difficult, and a rebuild is likely to be expensive.

Guessing games are frustrating, aren't they?

LSD is a (historically) mechanical device which uses a system of rotating friction plates or cones to prevent one wheel spinning whilst another stays still - thereby wasting all power as wheel spin.

Problems with LSDs often manifest as a clunk from the drivetrain. On a vehicle like that which almost certainly only worth a few hundred quid, it's not worth fixing if it is that - the vehicle will normally operate fine without a mechanical LSD for quite some period, barring major failure internally; with the exception being you lose its ability to control wheel slip which means more likelihood of getting stuck if you encounter slippery terrain or similar - unlikely I'd think in that kind of vehicle.

If it uses the same transmission as the CRV, the rear diff is connected to the propshaft through perculiar clutches and pumps, and the diff fluid needs changing (only using the special Honda fluid) every 30,000 miles or so or it can cause strange noises.

I'd imagine that it is something to do with the 4wd dropping in and out because the clutch is dragging.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

I did in a basic way and know much more now, just wish I'd thought to ask the mechanic about the terminology at the time, I was sure he said slipped disc. I have also learned how trvs work on my radiators (or not as the case was) and now have heat in my home! A productive afternoon's work!

Thanks all, I want to rehome this vehicle anyway, perhaps now is the time to do it. The next thing is how on earth do I value it?

"Limited slip diff" could very easily sound like "<blah> slipped disk" if you're not quite sure what he's on about.

    Tax returns done here...

eBay. 99p start, all faults declared. Let the market set the value.

Simple fact is, low. I'd be amazed if a 17yo, slightly clunky import bus like that would fetch more than a few hundred quid. I could be wrong, of course.

If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

  • Surely that's not a realistic expectation? Maybe I'm wrong about the price above... but why on earth would anyone pay that over other non-import options from other manufacturers???

    Madness.
