Who are Economy Energy and why have they taken over my energy supply?

I'm currently using Utilita for my gas and electricity supply. I've been with them for nearly 12 months in my new property.

At the beginning of November I had a call from Utilita informing us that another company was trying to take over the energy supply. I informed them that this wasn't authorised and to cancel it.

I have never had any contact from any other utility provider asking if I wanted to switch. 2 weeks before I had the call from Utilita a guy came out to do a meter reading, but I'm not sure if that's relevant.

Today I received another call from Utilita saying that in 3 days my supplier will change and the company taking over is Economy Energy. Utilita could not explain why this was happening, and they can not cancel the switch either.

Has anyone else experienced this? Who are Economy Energy and why have they taken over my energy supply without my knowledge or consent?

I do not want to switch. I'm happy with Utilita.

It would seem that you may be a victim of what is known as an Erroneous Transfer of supply. I suspect that EE has entered incorrect meter numbers when transferring another customer's supply. Call Utilita and tell them that transfer does not have your approval and ask them to implement the Code for Erroneous Transfers of Supply. You will not lose out.

  • Thank you for this information. I called both my current supplier and Economy Energy and stated this was an erroneous transfer. Utilitia have started the procedure, and EE have apparently cancelled the switch.

I've called EE in November - well my partner did - to cancel the last switch. The lady on the phone said it was never cancelled because the guy that dealt with her call didn't put the file into the correct folder. That's laughable and a lame excuse. But, fingers crossed it's cancelled.

I've also filed a complaint with EE to check how this happened. I should be getting a call within 10 days.

Many thanks for your help. This advice stopped the transfer :)

If it is Extra Energy that you are talking about here, then it is worth making a report to Ofgem. They will not investigate individual cases but they seem to be very interested in Extra Energy's activities at the moment according to other posts on this forum.

I would just e-mail Ofgem at consumeraffairs@ofgem.gov.uk and inform them that you have had to take action to stop an erroneous transfer of supply by Extra Energy.

  • Same thing with me, I was happy with Utilita energy then out of the blue on 31st of Dec my supply changed and i only found out when I had problems topping up both gas and electricity, when I got in contact with Utilita I was informed my supply had been changed to Economy energy, seems to me they are up to their old tricks of swapping people without permission, now I have to wait 28 days to swap back, let's see if they try to block the transfer, will update after the 28th.
