It is no longer mandatory to carry out a 2 yearly meter check. This obligation was rescinded on 1 April 2016 by Ofgem. Suppliers have to have procedures in place that comply with HSE regulations. Meter readings have now to be obtained once per year. If you have a smart meter, you may never see a meter reader.

In 5 years with EDF I do not recall one annual meter read. I do receive an annual statement at the 12 month anniversary of whichever tariff I last selected, though. If I change tariffs, I also get a statement which is basically a history of the previous tariff.

I carry out regular monthly meter readings and use EDF's website to send them. That is what you are doing, I see and is IMO the best way to try to keep your billing up to date. I do not intend to ask for or accept, a smart meter.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

I do a lot of smart meter inspections every day for British Gas. They come out as "must inspect " and will go to warrant if they get refused access if BG find that the payment level is suspect. They may be on the 5 year mark as BG have been fitting them for a long time now Its in the terms and conditions of supply to have the meters inspected by the supplier or their agents. Things like gas and electric meters will always need inspecting by independent verification for non smart meters. Apart from energy theft there are always faulty meters cropping up. Usually daily I find some meter fault, blank screens being the most common.

We had a man last week from GB Energy (he wasn't really he was from Lowry Beck) but he'd been sent by GB to read the meter.

That's the first time it's been read by a meter reader for at least three years (probably longer) and in that time we've been with Scottish Power, First Utility and GB Energy.

I read the meter myself every week and send in a reading to the supplier every month so I can check my statements and DD's to make sure that they are on track.

BG's 5 yearly derogation was also rescinded in April 2016 as it was deemed to be uncompetitive by Ofgem.

  • Even though I supply monthly online readings, I still get 2 visits a year from the G4S guys, regular as clockwork and their readings always feed into my bills shortly thereafter. As it's no inconvenience to me, I just look on the visits as a handy 'official' way to checkpoint the accuracy of my own readings.
