Home Insurance Rodents cover included?

Hi,

My friends house seems to be infested with rodents after she came back from her 2 weeks holiday. Rodents such mice/rats whatever they are chewed electrical wires in walls as most electrical in house doesnt work and caused leaks by copper central heating pipes. Also droppings are everywhere and they ripped damaged other household stuff. Left damage and huge mess.

She phoned up her home insurance and they told her rodents not included in policy so how does a insurance buyer know which home insurance companies provides rodent cover when doing a home insurance price comparison online? Or is it extra charge?

Thanks,

  • I can't think of one insurer that would cover rodent damage.

Don't buy any insurance policy until you are happy it covers your needs.

Damage by pests is usually excluded from all mainstream policies

See if a local broker (not Swinton) can find you cover if you want it, though if they can it won't be cheap!

Ok surely there must be a add on option during checkout that a buyer can select such as home emergency, accidental damage etc. options that provides cover for this?
If so which home insurance companies provide these add ons?

Most will offer you the add on of accidental damage, that's standard.
Most Brokers or direct insurers will offer home emergency too.

However neither of these add ons will cover rodent/vermin damage.

As posted previously if this is important to you/your friend then speak to a local broker (not Swinton) and they can ask their panel if they would be prepared to offer this cover.

Please update the thread with any successes you have, if this is asked again the answer will be there.

Sorry to be a total newbie asking questions that may sound silly but is there a website that show brokers near me and from the searcg results which broker do I go for?

Also is there a price comparison on brokers?

This link will show you brokers in your area who are members of Biba

    https://www.biba.org.uk/find-insurance

Covea offer optional cover that provides upto £150 to rid your house of pests. Unfortunately they are not a good Insurer

Insurers do make a distinction between paying to rectify the direct damage, and the associated costs of other consequences arising from the main incident.

Example: At work we suffered water damage from a fault in the flat roof covering. They would not cover the cost of fixing the roof, but did pay for the internal damage to wiring, ceilings, alarm systems etc.

I have read that although rodent damage to wiring is not covered, they usually do cover if as a consequence the house catches fire and burns down.
But it appears to be a grey area.
