Forced to take holiday on public holiday days in lieu

Hello,
I have a family member that is a full time employee. They work Thursday - Tuesdays.
This year the place they work at was closed from 25-27. They received normal pay for 2 days, but were forced to take some of their annual leave on the 27th as the place was shut.
Is this legal?

The public holiday aspect is irrelevant.
They are entitled to a minimum of 28 days holiday per year (or more if specified in their contract). However the employer can totally dictate when they must take their holiday. There is nothing special in employment law about public holidays.
So, as long as they get 28 days holiday on days when they otherwise would be working then it is legal.0 -

Employers can dictate when all holidays are taken - just look at school staff. They have no say on when they want to use their annual leave!0

An employer can tell an employee exactly when to take their holidays so yes is is legal. If the business isn't open then what else do they think will happen?Lost my soulmate so life is empty.
I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

Some companies shut the site during Christmas-New Year period but don't ask employees to use their annual leave. It is just courtesy though.ally.0

since 1998, under 2 decades.
prior to that the holiday pay act 1938 but that only covered some workers and got repealed anyway
so there was no right to holidays so by implication the employer could dictate every day.0 -
Not only legal but quite common.0
