Help! Barclaycard transfer gone wrong!!

Hi. Last month we decided to transfer the £3,700 on our Nationwide credit card to Barclaycard and make the most of the 12 months interest free period. Great. Today we received a statement from Nationwide showing the £3,700 still on that account plus the interest they were going to DD us for. We also had a statement from Barclaycard showing the £3,700 on that account!! When we phoned Barclaycard they could not tell us how the money had got into the account and there was no trace of a transfer from Nationwide. Similarly when speaking to Nationwide they had not been contacted by Barclaycard to transfer the credit card total over even though its the same amount.

We are absolutely stuck. How on earth do we get this sorted when there isn't a branch we can go to? We spent 4hrs on the phone today and nothing has been resolved. Does this mean we effectively owe almost £8k?

I think you should probably look at the date that you transferred the balance to Barclaycard as it is probably a timing difference. As far as I understand it, if you do a BCard balance transfer, the amount transferred to BCard will show on your account immediately but it can take up to several working days for the transfer to go through to the other account.

You might find it useful to register for online access rather than waiting for paper statments in the future so that you can keep a daily track.

Other experts will probably correct me, but I think you will have to pay the interest to NWide as the balance had not been cleared by the due date and you will also be liable to BCard for the interest from the date the balance transfer was made. However the capital amount should clear within a couple of days.

OP did the BT "last month".

Looks to me like a wrong card number was given somewhere along the line, and the £3,700 is sat in a Nationwide suspense account (or has paid somebody else's bill - and more besides!).
  • The language the OP is using is all wrong here, which doesn't help.

If you are applying to transfer a balance from a Nationwide card account to a Barclaycard account, it's Barclays who would have initiated the transaction.

They don't talk to Nationwide about it. They simply transfer the money electronically.

It's YOUR duty to give Barclaycard the right Nationwide card details. If you got it wrong, or Barclaycard made a mistake, Barclaycard would transfer the money but to the wrong Nationwide account. And you'd end up with the situation you've got.

And then you need to ask Barclaycard which Nationwide account they transferred the money to; and ask them to ask Nationwide for it back if it was the wrong account. Nationwide may refund it, but only once they've got authority from the person whose account it has incorrectly credited.
When we phoned Barclaycard they could not tell us how the money had got into the account and there was no trace of a transfer from Nationwide.
This absolutely doesn't make any sense. "The money" didn't get into the Barclaycard account - Barclaycard initiated a balance transfer to Nationwide. There wasn't a transfer from Nationwide.

The problem is that you don't actually transfer a balance from Nationwide to Barclaycard, you actually transfer money from Barclaycard to Nationwide.
