Virgin Media Claim

My line rental saver has now ended and I was going to ditch and switch to one of the cheaper deals currently on offer. I only have line rental and broadband.
When I went to cancel they said I was still in contract on my broadband till May '17. I asked why this was and they said that my loyalty discount that was applied back in May '16 (£9) meant that I signed up to a new 12 month contract. I said that the representative who offered this did not explain this and that I had received nothing in the post.
The person said that I can still cancel, but will need to pay charges up till May '17.
Is there any way I can get out of this
