What is the worst present you received this Christmas..and why?

  • I think the worst present I can think of is where someone bought me a present that goes right up against a mini-phobia that I have - and they know very well I have.

But I just shrugged - because that fact will be quite apparent to everyone else that knows what they got me (ie it doesn't say anything very good about them to do that). Followed by promptly giving it away to a charity shop:rotfl:
  • Some of these stories are

Not this year, but my ex mother in law once gave me a bright orange scarf, accompanied by the comment 'I bought it for myself but then thought you might like it', and despite the fact that I always wore black, and showed no signs of liking orange.

She was also one who gave me a framed print of an abstract painting of a zebra, despite the fact that Ive never had any particular interest in zebras, there are no zebra things in my life.

She's one of those people who collects 'gifts' all year and then at xmas she distributes them to the family regardless of how appropriate they are. Im not against collecting presents all year, but I think just handing them out just so everyones got something is a bit pointless.

Nothing will ever beat the time I turned 30 - an event I was dreading and amazed about all at once - my ex got me 12 AA batteries and an oven glove. It was the only time in my life I wasn't able to cover up my disbelief and disappointment on opening a gift, my face literally fell and a ''Thats it? I turn 30 and you get me this...?!'' argument followed.

My nowadays husband got me a laptop this year, I guess he's heard the battery/glove story a few times :D

    - On the subject of Yardley xmas stuff, my Nan would quite often give me something by Yardley in the 80's.

My mother-in-law gave me a catering pack of cling film, neatly wrapped, one year. She said it would last for ages and it did. I also had a washing up bowl another year.

She likes me better now 20 years on as I got cash this year :j

I know what my OH's worse Christmas present was. He has a phobia of a certain specific type of medical equipment and one year his father got him a pen in the shape of it. His dad knows full well that he has this phobia-he did it deliberately as he considers my OH's phobia comical.

In all other ways he is an absolutely lovely guy though.

You want a video of someone else's sewer? Hmmmm.

No; of my sewer, and I don't actually want one but it's always interesting to know where ones drains go.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.

*I'm a thirty something single bloke who's into tech/tv & the pub, I can't stand anything above minimal simple cooking*
This year my "aunt who always buys the weird presents" got me a crepe making set ??? :(
On the plus side, first year ever with no one buying me any Lynx :D

*Every year everyone in our family goes round saying that we won't be doing gifts for nieces and nephews this year, yet every year we still end up getting stuff*

    Now - to me - that's disrespectful.

One has to respect any that anyone has - even if you think they're daft.

I have a friend with a phobia. The first time she told me not to even mention it in conversation I thought she was joking - but I came to realise (2 or 3 mentions later) that it does seem to be genuine. How can saying a word harm you? But that's how she sees it - so I have to respect it. So I steer well clear of mentioning anything to do with it - even though I find it illogical (mind you - some would say mine is too...and, in some ways, it is....).

Worst pressie this year from my mum- 2 packets of couscous - I shook the packet and thought they were bath salts, but no. Slightly better than the year she sent 2 packets of Complan & 6 tea bags, but not as bad as the year we were struggling to feed 2 teens and I got a card from Oxfam saying she'd gifted a goat - an Oxfam goat.

I'd be delighted if she ever thought to send fruit in syrup / liqueur, M&S or otherwise.
  • Showed too much appreciation one year when ex mil bought me a certain perfume/bath set. I got it for the next 20 years and I hated the smell.
