Depends very much on the company if they will count "named driver" experience towards NCD, and you have to beware of "fronting" (claiming to be an additional/occasional driver when really you are the main/usual driver).I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

If the OP would be the main driver, which it sounds like they will be, then the answer to your question is no. To do so would be a criminal offence, commonly known as "fronting".Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230 -
As said if you dont really need a car why not get a power assisted bike or a electric moped you can get them new for under 2k even less for a a bike unless you want to spend a lot of cash on best. You can then always hire a car or use one of them car pool things that some areas have them.
If you use car and then have to let it go and dont get a car for a long while you often loose a NCD as I think it only last 2 years

Tempted to get one myself purely for parking easier in and around town I was going to get a electric bike0 -
I was quite excited by ebikes, there are loads on eBay for sensible money with dead batteries- I suspect it is from lack of use.
Then you find out how much a battery is for an ebike, never mind a scooter, and the whole thing is very much a non-starter.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

The sooner you get onto the insurance merrygoround the sooner your premiums come down; as you've seen, the cost of insurance is more than the value of the vehicle.
I'd say best to go for the free car, even if it is only for a year.0 -
The premium is high because it is a Golf and these are highly knickable cars.
My former workmate's son passed his test this year and, at the age of 21, has bought a Fiesta ST. Insurance is £800 with a black box fitted. Even I was shocked at how cheap this was.
As others have stated, a car will cost you money just parked on your drive. You have to take into account the costs of MOT, Tax, Insurance and depreceation.
Instead of the Golf, look for quotes on cars like the pre-1999 Octavia diesel, Mondeo diesel or a car that your granddad would drive. The less 'knickable' a car, the cheaper the insurance.
Also, try adding your mum or dad to the policy as additional drivers as this can drive the premiums down.Never Knowingly Understood.

Yes they are expensive but all high powered batteries accept lead acid are. Even for my drill your looking £60-£80 for 3mAh batteryI was quite excited by ebikes, there are loads on eBay for sensible money with dead batteries- I suspect it is from lack of use.

Why would you need telemetrics? Bought my little one a car recently and her insurance is under £1000 and no black box fitted. She wont be 25 for a few years yet.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

You would have to be registered as the keeper on the V5. You would also have to declare to the insurer that although not the owner you are the driver and keeper. As you are being loaned the car would the owners expect you to maintain and mend it too if required? That could work out either costly or a cause for a fallout.
These things are fine when there are no issues but as soon as there are they are a recipe for disaster.
Steer clear, get your own car if you need one or hire one for the times you do.0 -

Depends on the car. My son when he was 19 had a 1.2L MK6 Ford Fiesta. He blew up the engine on it (didn't check oil) and when looking around cars saw a MK3 Mondeo 2L Estate which caught his eye due to the fact he could fit all his fishing gear in and was about to become a dad. Didn't think he could afford to insure it as his Fiesta cost him £1200 but quotes ended up costing him £400 less than the Fiesta. Why? Because the Mondeo estate is considered a grandad car and there are plenty of MK6 Fiestas ragged round the streets by boy racers and involved in accidents so are a higher risk. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
