When i was little i did few welding using something like below.
http://www.screwfix.com/p/impax-im-arc140-10-115-140a-arc-welder-240v/17497?kpid=KINASEKPID&cm_mmc=GoogleLocal-_-Datafeed-_-Tools&cm_mmc=Google-_-Product%20Listing%20Ads-_-Sales%20Tracking-_-sales%20tracking%20url&gclid=CNmOmbn2k9ECFQ4R0wod9skBNQ

I want to weld my exhaust , would this do it?

I am interested in learning welding as diy hobby. I think exhaust material is steel right which this can weld?

It can weld steel. However, welding thin steel with a stick welder is not particularly easy for a novice. They are fine for boilers, ships and girders though. If you can get the exhaust off and on to a bench, you might have a chance.

Even for an experienced welder used exhausts can be a challenge as they are usually contaminated with all kinds of crap.
  • I think welding an exhaust will be difficult. In my experience once they've gone enough to break the original weld the rest of the exhaust will also be corroded to the degree that there's no good metal left to weld.

In any case of have thought it would be cheaper to take this to an experienced welder or just buy a new section of exhaust.
  • Well i don't want to weld broken bits but need to weld a bung for o2 sensor

Exhuast welding costs £40 and i can buy the machine for £70 and use it whenever that is why i though i shouod buy it
  • Well, if you're going to buy one I find the sort that feeds the wire through to be easier than the electrode rod sort

  • You would be better with a mig welder for that kind of welding rather than a stick.

Main thing to remember is that if the exhaust is worn badly enough to need welding then there may not be much metal thickness left to weld together as the corroded metal will just melt away with the heat.

That Arc welder is only good for thick steel about 2mm+.

Spend a bit more on a MIG welder and weld whatever, whenever.

For Diy standard, it may be enough to just teach yourself and do lots of practise. Check out YouTube videos and find any scrap metal you can. Bit by bit you should get better.
