my current laptop is a samsung RV511 and it's served me well (nearly 7 years) but it needs replacing now. would i be able to get a decent refurbished laptop for a good price? i want a short term replacement until i can afford something better.

My first thought are you may be paying nearly new prices for something second hand with no warranty, especially as the holiday deals are on.
My second thought is that I wonder if you have looked on http://www.hotukdeals.com/computers/all/hot as the prices will have dropped and the specs improved since you bought your 7 years ago0 -
Have you a budget? If you were happy with you're seven year old one I'm assuming you don't need anything too fancy.0

Yes, you can buy used laptops; companies usually have their systems on a 3-year depreciation cycle, so you can pick up business models on ebay & suchlike.
The current budget models don't seem particularly great to me - they still tend to be plasticky and don't have really high-spec processors.0 -

I tend to only buy refurbs - you can get better specs at less than low-end pricing that way. Of course you need to be choosy about sourcing and carefully check prices.0
