I thought the car was currently on AB12CDE and he wanted to put that on retention in order to put it back on at the end of the lease. Meanwhile he has been issued with FG12HJK.

That was my interpretation. He put AB12 CDE on retention first, so they issued/allocated FG12 HJK to that car .
Now he can't put XMA 5 onto AB12 CDE as it doesn't exist as a vehicle (it is on retention, so he doesn't want to replace it anyway), or FG12 HJK as he needs the doc ref off the V5 for FG12 HJK and he hasn't got it yet.

He didn't do the transfer & retention in one go.

But you can't put a "normal" plate on retention...can you??

A plate is a plate. The only difference between a "normal" one and a vanity one is whether somebody wants to transfer it or not.

So, yes, you could be allocated a plate, totally normally, on a new car that you want to keep - maybe for sentimental reasons. Or you could buy a car for the plate that was allocated onto it when new, retain that plate, and a new age-related one will be allocated from never-issued stock at DVLA.

However, what I think happened is the OP has a car on lease, and wants to return it when the lease ends with the original 'plate, so to be sure of this, has put the original 'plate on retention.

It is probable, but not guaranteed, that simply transferring XMA 5 onto the car and then back off again at the end of the lease would result in the original 'plate being re-allocated at that time, so there was no need for the retention, unless the lease car already has a special 'plate belonging to the lease company on it, as a history check will reveal the 'plates used anyway.

It is too late for that now, though.

if the OP had simply transferred the "vanity plate" to the vehicle , the job would have been a good un , when the lease was up , they then transfer the vanity plate to their next car , and the present one would have got its old number back

    Probably, but...

    That is not guaranteed.

whats it matter , ? , the number will NOT be re alocated** , hasnt on every old or new vehicle I have done this with

in 12 mths or less the number will be out of date to re issue (as new), and would only be reissued if someone actually wanted IT as a vanity plate

    I'm confused.

What did I just read? :p

It sounds like the OP should have just put his XMAS plate onto his car and let the DVLA take back the current plate already on the car. But instead he paid to put the current reg on retention and still hasn't put his XMAS plate onto the car. What a !!!! up :D
