Apple Watch vs Apple Watch Sport?

There's a huge difference in price but is there really a difference between the watches?

I've wanted one since they first came out but then this year, I heard rumours that they were going to release a waterproof one so I waited and they did, I've also been saving up money and everything and planned to wait until after Christmas to get one.

Now I'm contemplating ordering one. I know the sport edition is lighter but I've always been aware that the screen isn't as strong and scratch resistant as the regular Apple Watch. Is that the only difference?

I do want the watch for fitness, I want something to track my heart rate and steps for those times where I can't always have my phone with me, I want to be able to track runs, swimming and other exercise as well as diet. So at the moment, the sport edition does seem a better choice.

I'm worried about the screen though, is there much of a difference between the sapphire screen on the main Apple Watch opposed to the one on the Sport? I am just worried about smashing or scratching my screen, I work with big heavy cameras, tripods and other things whilst at university that I am known to knock my arms on quite a lot, and then I'm also working a part time job that I'm active on, pushing things around and possible knocks by heavy (ish) objects.

Not just the screens though, on average which is better?

  • Assuming you know that there are now three different versions of the Apple Watch - the original one, sometimes called Series 0, plus the two new ones released this year, Series 1 and Series 2. Prices are very fixed, give or take a £50 reduction occasionally, given Apples strict price control over their retailers.
series 1 and 2 watches all essentially have the same innards, even the most expensive fancy editions - the sport has an aluminium case and a different glass, is it worth an extra approx £200 ? For me, I would say no, I have just upgraded from my Pebble Steel to a series 2 Apple Watch and I amreally happy with it - you can get screen protectors to protect the glass.
A bit like different cars, I suppose, if the external features are that important to you, then perhaps paying nearly £200 more is the better option. For most, I huess the Sport version is quite expensive enough! Its a great watch, whichever version you choose.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking, I don't think it really is worth the extra £200. As long as I'm careful then I'm sure the sport edition should be fine :)

I have both the 'Series 0' and Apple Watch Nike + edition.

Have had the Series 0 since September 2015; it's fine for work or if I know I'm likely to catch it somehow; it's taken a few knocks/markings but is still sturdy enough.

I know they aren't money saving but I'd rather pay up to £399 for the Sport Edition instead of a few hundred pounds more for the slightly stronger model.

I went in to the Apple Store today to try on the 38mm and 42mm and decided I will get the Sport one. Though they're out of stock everywhere so I just ordered one online when I got home :)

Did you try Curry's PC World? They were the only retailer who had any in stock when I'd ordered mine.

I have to say that, though I have iPhones, iPad, AppleTV and Macs, I just don't "get" the Apple watch.

I've only just seen this response! I'd checked Currys though in which they were out of stock, but then realised the same model but just silver instead of Space Grey, was in stock so I got that one the next day :)

I'm the same but I got it for fitness more than anything. It comes in really useful for quickly checking messages if I'm at work or somewhere where I can't look at my phone but could get away with looking at a watch. But like I said, I wanted the fitness tracking and it does just that! Although as much as I like it, I do feel like it was a waste of money, the software just seems a little slow to be paying £400 for one, but I do enjoy it :)

I agreed, until a friend of mine gave me a Samsung steel watch thing, and as basic as it was, being able to check messages, who's calling, sort out what im listening to and with an app i downloaded, check what platform to get my train from without pulling my phone out my pocket, or leaving it on a shelf at home was awesome. It meant i wouldnt aimlessly scroll through facebook or instagram, I was more alert to things at home.
The watch broke, so i not longer use it, and i am now saving/shopping around for a new smart watch. if there is a better but cheaper non-apple one that fits my needs, ill go for that, if not the Apple Watch will be what i go for
