What can I do about this

I ordered a replacement wedding and engagement ring on Tuesday (20th Dec) at about 9pm from one of the highstreet jewellers in their 25% off diamonds sale that ended that night.

The rings come Thursday and even though I ordered a size down from the one I already have they are still a bit to big. So on Friday we took them to our local store to order an exchange for the correct size. Now the engagement ring is completely out of stock in every size (which I questioned the girl In the store about as two days previously it was in stock in every size and is not particularly cheap) and it seemed strange that it would sell out after the discount had finished 😕, the matching wedding band was still in stock in every size. They said my only option was to have it resized, but I decided I would go away and think about it (and keep checking the website to see if it came back in stock).

Well I checked a few times yesterday and it was still OOS (at the full price) and now this morning it is advertised as in the sale at half price but still out of stock. The wedding band is still in stock in all sizes but is full price.

What I want to know is where do i stand on this? I am really not happy paying £509 more than what I paid and feel they are using underhand tactics. I very much doubt the ring completely sold out at the full price in that short space of time and can they advertise it at a sale price (£850 from £1700) when it wasn't never in stock? (I have a screen print from yesterday and today both saying It's out of stock).

Feeling very ripped off right now

Thanks Kel

You can have your ring re-sized or you can return it for a refund (I presume you can still cancel the order; best to check this before you sit around too long).

As for the item now being out sale etc, what benefit do they gain from saying that the item is now out of sale if they secretly have stock?

And why would they lower the price if they secretly did have stock? Wouldn't you expect them to first try and sell the product at the higher price?

Mind you, maybe they kept back some stock so that they could run their after Christmas promotion! Or maybe they'll be ordering some more in. May be possible to return the ring and wait a few days for their stock to re-appear, ordering at the discounted price (you'll be taking a gamble that they will re-stock it).

Of course, it could also be that they've set this price reduction up in advance for after xmas and so it was all done automatically even though no stock exists.

I would also imagine that they would only stock a small number of rings (maybe even just 1) at any one time. So it is not unreasonable to assume that a few people have bought some engagement rings around Christmas, especially if they plan on giving it as an xmas present/proposing.

Bottom line is that your contract was for item X at price Y. Nothing underhanded about that, if you agreed to pay it! And companies run out of stock. FACT. May I recommend asking your OH what ring size they are in the future, or going to the ring shop to try it on, to avoid such hassle. I mean sure it will "ruin the surprise", so to speak, but I don't think they'd be bothered if the ultimate outcome was that they were getting a ring!

I'd personally get it re-sized and be done with the hassle!

It wasn't a surprise actually and as far as I was concerned it was the right size. I was measured, but the shop only carry one size in most rings and they do not all fit exactly the same.

Personnally don't agree with what you are saying of just getting it re-sized and be done with it, as we are talking about over £500 here and not a couple of quid.

But hey ho, i''ll just get to the store for opening and hopefully get the one they had there at half price (it's the same size as the one that needs resizing anyway!) and return this one! :rotfl:

Sales are never what they seem any more, it's all kidology for those desperate for things they can not normally afford to suddenly be achievable.

The real value is what you pay, even then it's still got a lot of profit in it for the retailer. Your just another victim of their underhand sales techniques, like the sofa and kitchen companies where surprisingly everything they sell seems to be half price.
  • I don't see what's underhand. If the price has now gone up £500, then I'd expect you'd have to pay that for a replacement under these circumstances anyway. There's nothing wrong with the ring, its just too big, so you're not automatically entitled to a replacement under SoGA.
